3 things we learned from the Saints' loss to the Denver Broncos | Saints

The New Orleans Saints lost 33-10 to Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos on Thursday night at Caesars Superdome. A team that was once 2-0 and is the talk of 2-5 in the NFL with no signs of turning around. Here are three things we learned about the Saints after their last loss.

Review Thursday

The Saints wore retro jerseys and then went back to the days when fans still wore paper bags over their heads. The Saints really couldn't have played much worse than they did in this game. The offense has had major problems, which should come as no surprise given the number of injuries the unit is currently dealing with. But that doesn't excuse the sloppiness, including a third-quarter drive when the Saints called penalties on three of four plays. This attention to detail lies with Dennis Allen and his employees.

The defense is cooked

The one thing you can usually count on with Allen is that his defense is reliable. Those days seem to be over. This wasn't the Kansas City Chiefs or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the last two opponents to destroy the Saints' defense. This was Denver, a team that ranked 29th in the league in yards per game. By halftime, the Broncos had already accumulated 242 yards of offense. They could have had a lot more than if rookie quarterback Bo Nix had been more accurate. They finished with 389 yards. Ouch!

What now?

The Saints' losing streak is now at five, their longest since Sean Payton's final season in 2021. The good news is that the Saints now get a short bye before playing the Chargers on October 27th. The bad news is the problems they have. In particular, the defense cannot be resolved in 10 days. It doesn't help that both starting cornerbacks left Thursday's game with injuries. Paulson Adebo (right knee) was forced off the field, never a good sign, and Marshon Lattimore left in the third quarter with a hamstring injury. The Saints' next two games are at the LA Chargers and Carolina Panthers. Both games will be difficult to win the way the Saints are playing now. Things aren't pretty.
