3-year-old recovers after being scratched by a monkey at Walmart Supercenter in Indiana

BEDFORD, Ind. (WKRC) – A toddler was scratched by a monkey at a Walmart in Indiana last Wednesday.

According to WXIN, a three-year-old child is recovering after being scratched by a monkey at a Walmart Supercenter in Bedford, Indiana.

CBS News reported that the 16-year-old Java macaque is an emotional support animal.

According to WXIN, police responded to the incident, adding that the child's parents refused treatment at the scene.

When speaking to the station, a woman who identified herself as the child's mother said the monkey's owner had provided paperwork for an “emotional support animal,” which she said was registered to a dog.

According to WXIN, the monkey was wearing a diaper and had a leash attached to his waist.

“A pet macaque that should never have come into the store scratched and injured my baby for no reason, and the animal wasn't even confiscated. We were not confronted with it, didn’t even know it was in the store, had no snacks and didn’t provoke it in any way,” the woman wrote to WXIN.

The woman told WXIN reporters that she hopes Indiana lawmakers will change laws allowing pets in public, adding that she hopes to see more regulation of wildlife.

According to the station, it remains unclear whether a police report was filed in connection with the incident.
