5 takeaways from the Packers' walk-off win over the Texans

5 takeaways from the Packers' walk-off win over the Texans

  1. The defensive performance was explosive.

The 22 points the Texans scored say nothing about how well the Packers defense played. Green Bay allowed Houston just 197 total yards, a 4-of-13 conversion rate on third downs and a 58.8 passer rating to quarterback CJ Stroud.

Stroud struggled with an aggressive pass rush for most of the game, throwing for just 86 yards on 10 of 21 completions and was sacked four times for minus-31 yards. Running back Joe Mixon (25 carries, 115 yards, two touchdowns) was the only offensive player to cause problems for the Packers.

“The defense played phenomenal,” Love said. “The rush package we had out there came home great.”

LaFleur, who awarded a game ball to new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley after the game, added: “We didn’t allow CJ to get comfortable. He’s a real guy in this league and he’s going to stay that way for a long time.”

“We just put a lot of pressure on him. That’s what it looked like to me.”

The Texans were given 10 points on two early giveaways, an interception and a botched punt return, with both of Houston's possessions starting at Green Bay's 11-yard line. The defense held the Texans to a field goal on the first play. The Packers also stopped the Texans in the red zone shortly after the two-minute warning at the end, leaving Green Bay's deficit to just one point with 1:44 left.

Two other times the Texans found themselves within or on the edge of field goal range and were knocked backwards by third-down sacks and Quay Walker (concussion).

Eric Wilson returned to full-time action and finished the game with two sacks and four total tackles for loss in an outstanding performance.

“He's the consummate professional when it comes to always knowing what to do and then being able to go out and deliver when you need him to,” LaFleur said of Wilson. “I'm really proud of him. We are lucky to have such a man on our team.”

  1. The ups and downs on offense continued until the end.

Love threw three touchdown passes, including two pinpoint throws to tight end Tucker Kraft and receiver Dontayvion Wicks. He also found running back Josh Jacobs for his first career TD.

But two interceptions were undoubtedly damaging, as were the three consecutive three-and-outs deep in Green Bay territory in the second half, when a good drive could have given the Packers some breathing room. Love was also sacked three times while throwing for 220 yards (95.5 rating).

Ultimately, it came down to performance after the Texans drove 45 yards in 6½ minutes to score a field goal and take a 22-21 lead.

From his own 30 yards, Love completed 4 of 7 for 39 yards, putting the day's difficult moments behind him to execute when it was needed most.

“I just talked to him about it – that’s his superpower,” LaFleur said. “No matter what happened, good or bad, he continues to fight and remains resilient. The moment is never too big for him.”
