(This story has been updated to add new information.)

By Thursday afternoon, 911 lines were back in service in several parts of the Coachella Valley after an hours-long outage. But some problems remained.

Police in Palm Springs and Cathedral City said their lines were working, while Indio police said they were working for people who use some cell phone providers — but not for people who call Verizon.

It was unclear whether Verizon customers had the same problem reaching other police departments, although Palm Springs and Cathedral City authorities did not mention such a problem.

Palm Springs police first reported late Thursday morning that the city's 911 emergency number was down and directed residents who needed urgent assistance to call alternative numbers or text 911.

Several other departments that provide emergency services soon followed with statements that their systems were experiencing the same problems, with the problem apparently spanning the entire valley.

Here are the alternative numbers provided by various agencies for residents to use if they have difficulty getting through to 911:

Riverside County Sheriff's Department (provides police services in Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Indian Wells, Coachella and unincorporated rural areas): 951-684-0911

Palm Springs Police and Fire Department: 760-327-1441

Desert Hot Springs Police: 760-329-2904, press 2 after dialing

Cathedral City Police and Fire Department: 760-770-0303

Indian Police: 760-391-4051
