Tesla is recalling around 27,000 Cybertrucks due to a problem with the rearview camera that delays the display of the image on the dashboard, increasing the risk of an accident.

According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the rearview display can remain blank for up to eight seconds when you select reverse gear. That's far more than the 2 seconds required by federal safety regulations.

Tesla has released a free over-the-air software update to fix the problem. Drivers can also reverse the Cybertruck by “performing shoulder checks and using their mirrors,” according to the NHTSA.

This is the fifth recall for the electric vehicle since its introduction last year. Most recently, a recall in June involved the truck's giant single windshield wiper and a piece of plastic trim on the edge of the truck's bed that could loosen and separate from the vehicle while driving.

The trucks were recalled in April because the accelerator pedal could get stuck when depressed. In January, Tesla issued a software recall for 2.2 million of its vehicles, including Cybertrucks, because the letters on the warning lights were too small to easily read. This issue was also resolved through an over-the-air software update.

Tesla reported a sales increase this week for the first time this year, although year-to-date sales still lag the same period in 2023.

The company delivered nearly 463,000 vehicles worldwide in the third quarter, up 6% year-on-year and 4% more than in the second quarter of this year.
