Miami Football: Star QB Cam Ward makes Heisman statement in epic comeback win over Cal

No. 8 Miami survived its Week 6 matchup against its ACC counterpart, the California Golden Bears. The Hurricanes, who had lost by as many as 25 points in the second half, stormed back thanks to their Heisman hopeful and star quarterback Cam Ward.

Ward delivered another Heisman moment, leading the Hurricanes to a 39-38 victory over Cal. Ward did what only he could do: 35 of his 53 passes for 437 yards, two touchdowns and an interception with the improbable comeback on the road.

Ward led the fourth straight touchdown drive, ending the game and spoiling what seemed to be just one of Saturday's many big upsets. Instead, Ward sent the sellout crowd at Memorial Stadium home, dissatisfied with another dramatic Hurricanes victory.

Although spirits were high for the Hurricanes after the win, Ward said after the game that he and the team couldn't fall behind like that.

“We just can’t put ourselves in these situations to come back,” Ward said. “It’s two games in a row, we had to do that. We have to hold on tight.

The 22-year-old quarterback racked up 277 yards of offense in the fourth quarter, more than any other player in the last seven years. In his first season in Coral Gables, he finished week six leading the nation in passing yards (2,380) and touchdown passes (20).

Ward is proving why he is the best quarterback in the country this year, and his teammates trust no one more than Ward himself.

“When 1 has the ball in his hands, the game is never over,” receiver Xavier Restrepo said, referring to Ward’s uniform number. “We have a lot of confidence in this guy.”

The Golden Bears had a rare opportunity to get a big win in front of their home crowd, but Ward and Miami had other things on their minds. The Hurricanes now have a 6-0 record, the third time in the last 20 years that they have started with that record.

Cal has lost 10 straight games to ranked teams and is 1-26 against top-10 teams since the start of the 2004 season. The only win during that span came in 2017 against the Washington State Cougars.

The Hurricanes have shown time and time again that football is back in Miami, and that's a credit to Ward.

According to Fan Duel, Ward has the third-best odds of winning the Heisman at +600 odds.
