Why Al Pacino starred in Adam Sandler's Jack and Jill

Why Al Pacino starred in Adam Sandler's Jack and Jill

Al Pacino has starred in some of the greatest films of all time, received multiple award nominations and won numerous awards throughout his long career. Those awards include a handful of Razzies, two of which he received for his starring role in the Adam Sandler abomination Jack and Jillsomething he has revealed that this was the case for a reason – he was broke.

Jack and JillLike many of Sandler's films, this film was a mix of juvenile humor, with the comedy star playing the dual roles of Jack and Jill – yes, it was one of those films. The story, if you can even call it that, revolved around Sandler's advertising executive Jack, who awaits the arrival of his twin sister Jill for Thanksgiving and tries to get Al Pacino to appear in an ad for Dunkin' Donuts. While the film was a resounding success by all accounts, Pacino was singled out as the film's sole highlight – even if it did earn him two Razzies in the process.

During an in-depth look at his life at The New York Times, Pacino explained that the circumstances surrounding his accountant's imprisonment and his bank balance plummeting directly led to him agreeing to appear in the film.

“I think we should start with Adam Sandler's Jack and Jill. I find that funny. It came at a time in my life when I needed it, because only after I found out I had no money left. My accountant was in jail and I needed something quick. So I took that. There's something I do in this movie: They got me to do a Dunkin' Donuts commercial. Do you know how many people think I actually did that commercial?”

Al Pacino's career hit a low point with Jack and Jill

Every actor has the movie they shouldn't have done and for Al Pacino Jack and Jill it definitely was. Although the actor had his reasons, the film gave him the worst Rotten Tomatoes score of his career. With a Tomatometer score of just 3%, the film's place at the bottom of Pacino's list is hard to deny, and as the holder of that title, it seems unlikely to be beaten.

However, it's hard to keep a talented actor down, and the last decade of Pacino's career has produced several very memorable performances from one of the greatest actors of his generation. Roles much more worthy of Pacino's talents included the title character in 2015 Danny CollinsJimmy Hoffa in Martin Scorsese's epic The Irishmanand Marvin Schwarz in Quentin Tarantino's Once upon a time… in Hollywood.
