Mangold said in July Rolling Stone that despite their similarities – musical biographies about American icons – he intentionally approached the two films very differently.

“I didn't want to turn Bob Dylan into a simple character who unlocks one simple thing that then makes you say, 'Ah, I understand him now.' I don’t think that’s possible after meeting him,” Mangold said. “There is a difference. Johnny Cash is characterized by his upbringing, the loss of his brother, the shame he carries with him in life, and an addiction fueled by his childhood worries. It clearly fits together… It wouldn't be so easy with Bob.”

He called the 2024 film a “strong ensemble piece” and explained: “It certainly follows Bob, but I'm much more interested in the mark this person left on others, just as I'm interested in finding out who. ” he’s conventionally cinematic Freudian in a way. That's why Elle's character and Pete Seeger, Edward's character and of course Joan Baez and many others are more than just passing through in some sort of Hall of Presidents pageant. They are important players who come in and out of the film.”
