Nearly 100 tornado warnings were issued ahead of Hurricane Milton's landfall

The National Weather Service issued at least 98 tornado warnings in the state of Florida between noon and 6 p.m. ET on Wednesday as Hurricane Milton prepared to make landfall on the state's west coast. The service reported sightings of at least 20 tornadoes, the Washington Post reports.

There is now severe flooding across the state, including in Naples and Fort Myers, where the storm surge caused water levels to rise to over 3 feet

As Hurricane Milton makes landfall, storm chaser and meteorologist Reed Timmer, who has been tracking the storm, shared footage from south of Tampa. Hurricane-force wind gusts (74 mph or greater) were reported along the coast, including a 90 mph gust at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, according to CNN.

More than 311,000 Florida customers are without power as Hurricane Milton makes landfall near Tampa, according to Poweroutage.us. The site tracks a total of 11.5 million users in the state. Most of the outages are on the state's Gulf Coast.

Florida prepares for Hurricane Milton's landfall as winds batter the state

Florida is bracing for the impending landfall of Hurricane Milton, with winds continuing to increase along the state's west coast as the storm's center heads toward Sarasota.

Sustained winds of 58 mph and a gust of 77 mph were reported near Tampa Bay, according to the National Hurricane Center.

CNN reported that storm surge is increasing in Southwest Florida: Naples is under nearly 3 feet of water. Fort Myers experienced nearly 2 feet of flooding over normally dry ground as of 5 p.m. ET.
