U.S. Senate candidate Gloria Johnson visits Jackson and speaks at a town hall meeting

JACKSON, Tenn. – A U.S. Senate candidate from Tennessee is making a campaign stop here in the Hub City.

The Madison Area Democratic Women hosted a town hall with Tennessee U.S. Senate candidate Gloria Johnson Thursday evening at Jackson State Community College.

“Public forums are crucial because people deserve to hear from the people who will represent them. I thought these questions were so good – so well thought out, and you can tell right away that these were the things that were on people's minds,” Johnson said.

Supporters and those curious about Johnson's future plans had the opportunity to sit and ask questions during this forum. She says she has visited every county in the state to talk to voters.

“What keeps me going are the supporters. I have never seen so much interest, support and enthusiasm for a statewide race in a long time. People rely on someone to work for them and not for corporations and not for lobbyists,” Johnson said.

Asked how to encourage voters who may not care about the issues, Johnson said: “People want to hear what they care about.”

“Today, kids leave college with $50,000 to $100,000 in debt. If you want to start a family, you can't go that far with debt. We make it impossible for them. “So you have to address the issues that people care about and make them realize that if more of us vote, we'll have the best government,” Johnson said.

Because Tennessee is a predominantly Republican state, this election is about right and wrong questions, according to Johnson, the Democratic Senate candidate.

“It was amazing how Tennesseans improved. How they want to help, how they want to make Tennessee better and it's really about doing the right thing for Tennesseans. It’s not a left-right problem, it’s a right-wrong problem,” Johnson said.

Gloria Johnson will face Republican incumbent Marsha Blackburn in the general election on Tuesday, November 5th. Blackburn is scheduled to perform at an event in Jackson next week.
