The Saints are turning to the rookie because starting quarterback Derek Carr is injured.

New Orleans head coach Dennis Allen told reporters Wednesday that Spencer Rattler will start Sunday when the Saints host the Buccaneers.

“We talked a lot as a team about what we thought was best for us to give ourselves the best chance to win the game,” Allen said, according to Fox Sports. “That was the decision we made. We’re excited for him to get the opportunity to go in there and let him play and see what he can do.”

Carr suffered a strained oblique muscle during Monday night's loss to the Chiefs and is currently being considered week-to-week.

Quarterback Jake Haener came in to replace Carr in Monday night's game and the second-year QB completed two of his seven pass attempts for 17 yards and rushed for an additional 11 yards.

“Honestly, it wasn’t even a hit. “It was just as I dropped back and was about to throw… I asked if there was anything we could do about it and there wasn't enough time,” Carr said of the injury after the Chiefs game.

Rattler was selected by the Saints in the fifth round of this year's draft and has yet to make his NFL debut this season.

He played in three preseason appearances, completing 20 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown.

According to NFL Network, Carr is expected to miss several weeks due to the injury, meaning Rattler could take over the starting spot for the time being.

The Saints' schedule will be somewhat congested over the next two weeks as the team is scheduled to play two games within five days.

New Orleans will face the Buccaneers on Sunday and then play their Week 7 match on “Thursday Night Football” against the Broncos on October 17.
