Broadcaster Bob Costas appeared to be caught on a hot mic and expressed some reservations about having to read an ad for CNN during TBS' broadcast of Game 2 between the Yankees and Royals on Monday night.

As Royals reliever Angel Zerpa stood on the mound preparing to throw a pitch, Costas appeared alarmed that he was about to do a commercial for CNN that apparently put him in a “difficult spot.”

Why exactly this was the case was not entirely clear.

“A CNN promo?” Costas asks, seemingly unaware that he’s on the radio.

“This puts me in a difficult position,” he said after breaking a brief silence.

How this moment came about was somewhat unclear.

As part of the broadcast setup, broadcasters have the option of speaking to producers in the production van via a talkback button that mutes them for on-air listening, and it is unknown whether Costas believed he had pressed the button and that a producer also said to them.

Costas has had a relationship with CNN since joining the news network as a contributor in 2020.

The idea of TBS airing a commercial for CNN was also not unusual, as Warner Bros. Discovery owns both TBS and CNN.

Costas called the American League Division Series between the Yankees and Royals, but received much criticism from baseball fans for the way he called the games.

Fans had called for him to be removed from broadcasts during Game 1 for his sleepy approach to the game, and criticism from fans on X continued into Game 2 on Monday night.

The once-revered broadcaster is sure to draw even more attention with a hot mic moment or two during Monday's game.
