Ali Wong talks about what Bill Hader did to win her over after their divorce

Ali Wong has told how her boyfriend Bill Hader won her over after she split from her husband of eight years, Justin Hakuta.

The 42-year-old actress opened up about finding love again after her divorce in her new Netflix special. Ali Wong: Single Lady, which was released on October 8th. During the stand-up comedy segment, she shared that many different men reached out to her when her divorce from Hakuta was announced.

She also confessed that after her breakup, she decided to join a dating app, which she paid for. But the day after she joined the app, she received a call from someone she had previously met at “two dinner parties.” During the call, which came after the man got her number from a mutual friend, he took the opportunity to tell the comedian that he admired her.

“He said, ‘Hey, Ali. I happened to hear the news of your divorce today and I have to tell you that I am excited. I'm Ali because I've always had a crush on you and told my best friend years ago that you were the woman of my dreams. “I know it sounds crazy, but I want you to be my girlfriend,” Wong recalled of her conversation with the potential suitor Vanity Fair.

The beef Star then shared her response to the message, hilariously confessing that she had just paid big money for a year-long subscription to a dating app. “I just paid $250. “You seem really nice, but I have to get my money’s worth,” she joked.

Wong noted that after the call, she took a trip to Europe, where she received several gifts from the man who called her. “I arrived in London and found that this man had sent me such a big bouquet of flowers,” she tells the crowd, showing the size of the floral arrangement with her hands.

The actress further recalled that when she arrived in Amsterdam, she discovered another large bouquet of flowers. The trend continued with another gift in Cologne before she received “six huge floral arrangements” at her final destination in Copenhagen.

She joked that her girlfriends thought these gifts were “so sweet,” while her male friends thought the man who sent the flowers “sounded like a psychopath.”

“‘Hey, are you okay, Ali? Do you feel safe?'” she joked, mimicking her male friends. “Men have become so cheap and lazy. Now, if a fellow human being commits an act of kindness or a romantic gesture, it must be a symptom of an undiagnosed mental illness.”

At the end of the special, the mother of two children she shared with Hakuta confirmed that she was in a relationship with the person who sent her all those flowers, namely Hader.

“I have a new boyfriend now, that’s true,” she said. “I fell in love again. Some of you may know who the guy is. And he happens to be the man who sent me all those flowers to Europe.”

When the Netflix special was filmed in May 2024, she never mentioned Hader by name. However, according to Rolling StoneDuring her final night, part of her 12-day stint at Netflix Is a Joke Fest, Wong asked the crowd if she wanted to meet her boyfriend.

“It was a very informative evening,” he joked as he walked on stage with his girlfriend.

In April 2023, Hader confirmed that he and Wong had rekindled their relationship after briefly dating in the fall of 2022. His rep confirmed the romance after speaking about his girlfriend in an interview with Wong Colliderwhere he originally didn't mention her by name.

“My girlfriend and I just found out that I haven’t had a vacation in 10 years,” he said Saturday Night Live alum told the publication last year when asked about his plans after his comedy series: Barryended. “I went to San Francisco with her, but that doesn’t really count.”
