Coco Gauff admits she is fit after winning her eighth straight match at the Wuhan Open

Coco Gauff has enjoyed her last two weeks on the WTA Tour, but from a physical perspective it hasn't been easy.

After the China Open, the WTA Tour went straight to the Wuhan Open, which ends on Sunday.

Gauff won in Beijing and barely had time to rest as she flew straight to Wuhan to begin preparations for the ongoing tournament.

The 20-year-old is now in the quarterfinals and is looking to win back-to-back titles for the first time and secure the Cincinnati Open and US Open titles in 2023.

What did Coco Gauff say about her fitness at the Wuhan Open?

Before Sunday's success in Beijing, Coco Gauff had not reached the quarterfinals at any event since the French Open in June. She has now played the last eight straight matches after defeating Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 6-1 on Thursday morning.

Despite her recent success, it has been a physically demanding time for Gauff, who alluded to the slower and more difficult conditions in Wuhan after her first win against Viktoriya Tomova.

But the world number four is happy to take part and is trying to overcome all the challenges to become the champion of Wuhan.

“I mean, every day is hard,” Gauff said during her on-court interview. “I have expended a lot of energy in the last few days, so every game is a blessing. I’m just happy to have the chance to play, maybe even when I’m not at 100%.”

Gauff put in one of her best performances of the season when she only conceded five games to Kostyuk in Wuhan.

She didn't double fault and won 80% of her first serve points and an impressive 71% behind second serves.

Gauff converted all five break points against the Ukrainian on the way to the third time in her career and was satisfied with her performance.

“I played really well today. “Marta is a strong opponent but happy with the way I play,” she added. “In every game I just try to move forward. There were a lot of games in a short period of time, but I’m happy with my performance today.”
