It's officially spooky season, which means this year's daylight saving time is soon coming to an end.

In November, millions of Americans will turn back their clocks, marking the end of daylight saving time in 2024. The controversial practice of “spring forward” and “fall back” has been observed in most states for decades.

Due to current daylight saving time, most Americans lose an hour of sleep on the second Sunday in March and gain an hour on the first Sunday in November.

Here's what you should know about the end of daylight saving time in 2024.

When does summer time end? When should the clock change in autumn 2024?

Daylight saving time will end in 2024 Sunday, November 3rd, 2 a.m.

Why do we gain an hour in November?

In November we gain an hour to have more daylight in the morning. When we “spring forward” in March, it’s all about bringing in more daylight on summer evenings.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the fall equinox is September 22nd and marks the start of the fall season.

Why do we have summer time?

In 1966, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act, which standardized the length of daylight saving time from March to November.

Daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday in March every year and ends on the first Sunday in November.

The Department of Transportation said daylight saving time saves energy, prevents traffic accidents and reduces crime. The DOT monitors time zones and consistent compliance with daylight saving time since the railroad industry was the first to adopt time standards.

Which states have abolished daylight saving time?

Not all states and US territories participate in Daylight Saving Time.

Hawaii and Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) do not observe daylight saving time, nor do the territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Who introduced daylight saving time?

Benjamin Franklin is often credited with being the first to propose daylight saving time in his 1784 essay “An Economical Project.” However, the idea was not seriously considered until more than a century later, when William Willetts, a British builder, advocated vehemently for it.

The current daylight saving time format was proposed in New Zealand by entomologist George Hudson.

In 1895, he recommended a two-hour time change because he wanted more daylight after work for summer insect hunting.

Does daylight saving time end in Ohio?

The Ohio House of Representatives Committee on State and Local Government passed House Concurrent Resolution 7 in October 2023, calling on Congress to enact the Sunshine Uniformity Act. This bill would make daylight saving time permanent and end the biannual tradition of changing clocks.

State Representatives Rodney Creech, R-West Alexandria, and Bob Peterson, R-Sabina, supported the bill.

Under that resolution passed by the Ohio House, switching to permanent daylight saving time would increase hours of sunlight in the evening hours during the winter months, helping combat mental health issues, Creech said.

However, the bill did not pass the US House of Representatives and was not signed by President Joe Biden.

Is it Daylight Saving Time or Daylight Saving Time?

While it is common to hear “daylight saving time” with an “s,” the correct term is “daylight saving time” because this practice conserves daylight.
