The first part of Outer Banks Season 4 ended in a shocking way – and there are still plenty of questions that need to be answered.

Outer Banks, which premiered in 2020, follows the conflict between two groups of teenagers in a coastal town in North Carolina. The social divide is introduced by the Kooks, the wealthy residents and the working class, also known as the Pogues. The search for lost treasure causes the groups to become even more divided, while a found family forms between the group of friends at the center of the series.

Season 4 began a few months after John B (Chase Stokes), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), JJ (Rudy Pankow) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) found the gold, which they tracked for several seasons. They use the money to start a business, but soon burn all of their assets and have to go hunting for treasure again.

However, their next adventure is far more than they ever expected. Between ghosts and a rival group of deadly treasure hunters, the Pogues find themselves in danger at the end of the first season. There's also a death, a shocking paternity reveal, and more twists that will keep fans guessing until the series returns with Part 2 on November 7th.

John B Routledge

Season 4 begins with John B still grieving his father's death. He finds a new home within the group as they live together and build a business. John B also begins official future planning with Sarah, which also includes talk of a honeymoon and children. Throughout the season, John B tries in vain to keep JJ in check. Instead, John B decides to get involved in the machinations and search for treasure with the rest of the group. He ends the first part of the season triggered by his father's death, which prevents him from realizing that Sarah and Pope need help.

Sarah Cameron

After her father's death, Sarah becomes even more isolated from the rest of her family, blaming her for what happened. She seeks comfort from her family, the Pogues, as they start over as a group. Sarah and Cleo are always at the checkout and happy to welcome new customers, but soon they go on a treasure hunt again to secure their business.

In her personal life, Sarah is doing well with John B, although she is urging him to press pause on his baby plans. She joins John B, Cleo and Pope in Charleston and that's when everything starts to go wrong. Cleo and John B remain above ground while Sarah and Pope are stuck below. It remains unclear whether Sarah and Pope will make it as the water begins to rise around them.

Kiara has just solidified her relationship with JJ and is equally excited about the group's new beginning, especially after her parents disowned her in the first few minutes of the season. She continues to support JJ despite some of his more questionable decisions and fights to keep her new venture afloat. Kiara accompanies JJ on a diving trip for the amulet, which embarrasses them both. Kiara also comes into conflict with the Kooks again.

The success with the gold is short-lived for JJ. Desperate to save his new life from failure, JJ bets his last money on a motorcycle race. He loses and is now more determined than ever to find a way to get them more money. Enter Blackbeard's mystery, which JJ volunteers to be the first to solve.

In Season 4, JJ experiences a near-death experience while diving in the ocean, a risky escape from a hyperbaric chamber, and a reunion with his father. But near the end of Part 1, JJ finds out that Luke is not his biological father. Chandler Groff is actually JJ's father, which doesn't bode well Us because the newcomer doesn't seem to have the best intentions.

Pope Heyward

Being the voice of reason proves even more difficult for Pope in Season 4. After reminding everyone over and over again how they need to save their last nugget of gold, they end up with no money and a property tax that threatens their future as they build for themselves. Pope is determined to keep them afloat, so he begins , to search for the lost treasure connected to Blackbeard. He is able to put some pieces together, but Cleo's kidnapping gives the villains the opportunity to steal the amulet.

With the help of Pope's research, the group continues to search for the blue crown. That leaves them in the catacombs of a church in Charleston. Things take a turn and suddenly Pope and Sarah find themselves stuck under a church as the water rises.

Cleo

After finding her place with the Pogues, Cleo helps the others set up their bait and tackle business. She takes care of preparing the food for their new place, but it isn't long before the group is struggling with money problems. Cleo eventually joins the others on Blackbeard's treasure hunt, which leads to her reuniting with Terrance (Terence Rosemore). Her old employer now works for Lightner and takes Cleo hostage to track down the amulet.

A twist reveals that Terrance still cares for Cleo and tries to protect her, leading to him being killed before Season 4 comes to an end. The Pogues then have to hide Terrance's body before burying him at sea. We get our last glimpse of Cleo on a trip with John B, Sarah and Pope in Charleston.

Rafe Cameron

The season begins with Rafe (Drew Starkey) in the argument with Sarah after her father's death – and that doesn't change much until the end of the first part. But Rafe is after Wards (Charles Esten) Death. Suddenly everyone wants access to the Cameron fortune and it's up to Rafe to figure out which offers are real and which are designed to manipulate him.

He also finds himself in uncharted waters with his girlfriend Sofia (Fiona Palomo). She is a Pogue who wants to become a Kook, but later gets caught up in a scheme to get Rafe's money. This is where things get tricky, as Sofia's feelings for Rafe begin to cloud her judgment – and he seems to have no idea what game is being played against him.
