England vs Greece LIVE: Nations League updates as Pavlidis breaks deadlock at Wembley

England vs Greece LIVE: Nations League updates as Pavlidis breaks deadlock at Wembley

Carsley says England doesn't give preference to players from big clubs

England host Greece in the Nations League as both teams look to remain unbeaten in this top-flight clash at Wembley Stadium.

Lee Carsley's reign got off to a perfect start with wins over the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September internationals. Harry Kane scored twice against the latter in his 100th appearance for the national team but is doubtful for this game after training outside the squad earlier in the week.

England have also been boosted by the returns of Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer, which will have the manager thinking about how they all fit into the lineup.

Greece also won both Nations League games against the same opponent, but are better than the Three Lions with five goals in these two games. This game represents the biggest test of the Carsley era so far, but should England pull it off they would be favorites to win promotion back to League A.

England 0-1 Greece

58 mins: Lee Carsley makes his first tactical change, introducing Ollie Watkins in place of Anthony Gordon. This gives England a target to aim for in the forward line and the Aston Villa striker is not afraid to shoot.

Greece scores again after a long ball finds its way to Koulierakis. He plays the ball inside to Pavlidis, who takes the ball into the penalty area and sets up a teammate to score.

However, Pavlidis was offside and the flag was raised immediately.

55th minute: England wobbles here. Defensively they don't look comfortable at all and Jordan Pickford is called into action to block a shot.

The pragmatism of the Gareth Southgate era is not at all evident tonight.

England 0-1 Greece

52nd minute: With this goal, England conceded a goal for the first time under Lee Carsley. How will the manager react?

Bukayo Saka fell to the ground from the ball and had to be taken off the field. Noni Madueke is the man to replace him, but that shouldn't have any impact on the formation.

GOAL! England – Greece 0-1 (Pavlidis, 49')

49th minute: That's a great goal!

England is completely at sea on defense while Greece increases the pressure. Konstantinos Koulierakis drives down the inside left channel before passing it to Vangelis Pavlidis.

He weaves between three English defenders and flicks a low shot past Jordan Pickford into the net!

England 0-0 Greece

Alexander-Arnold sends the ball over the line for Saka and then sprints into the penalty area. Saka keeps the ball and pushes Alexander-Arnold into the penalty area.

The defender backheels the ball in the hope of setting up Foden, but his pass goes wide and Greece clears their line.

It was a clever, quick move by the hosts that almost worked.

Anyone interested in some stats?

England created seven chances in the first half, only one of which was on goal. Despite only having 40% possession, Greece were able to almost equal the score with six chances and one on goal.

These chances do not include the attempt that was cleared off the line or the Greek goal that was disallowed.

Greece is calm and dangerous and can easily win this game if England doesn't find a solution.
