The Arnault family wants to acquire a majority stake in the Paris FC football club

SET UP: Who knew Paris had a second football team?

The football scene in the French capital is heating up after reports that luxury tycoon Bernard Arnault's family holding company is poised to buy a majority stake in Paris FC, the second division club that sits in the shadow of Paris Saint-Germain.

The Arnault family's holding group, Agache, is set to acquire a 55 percent stake in the football club in collaboration with energy drink maker Red Bull, which would acquire 15 percent, sources familiar with the deal say. Pierre Ferracci, president and majority shareholder of Paris FC, would keep 30 percent.

Red Bull, which owns Formula One team Oracle Red Bull Racing, said on Wednesday it has appointed German soccer legend Jürgen Klopp as global soccer chief, leading its international network of clubs including Leipzig, Salzburg and the New York Red Bulls .

The acquisition of Paris FC, expected to be announced next week, marks the Arnault clan's latest expansion into sports, following luxury group LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton's sponsorship of the Paris Olympics and its recent 10-year partnership with the Formula 1 racing championship has been announced.

French sports newspaper L'Equipe broke the news late on Wednesday that Antoine Arnault, the group's head of communications, image and environment and an avid football fan, had planned the deal along with his brother Frédéric Arnault, CEO and managing director of LVMH Watches Agache. LVMH declined to comment.

It sets the stage for a challenge to the supremacy of PSG, which is owned by Qatar Sports Investments and regularly tops the French league.

The deal has another interesting dimension: Kering founder François Pinault owns the Stade Rennais football club in Brittany. If Paris FC advances to the first division, both clubs could face off on the pitch, setting the stage for another showdown between the two historic rivals in the luxury sector.
