Cal Clutterbuck will be joining the NY Islanders as an MSG analyst for the season opener

Cal Clutterbuck will be working New York Islanders home opener at UBS Arena on Thursday, but he will be sitting behind a desk, not on a bench. The NHL's all-time great will be there MSG Networks Reporting on the start of the season against Utah Hockey Club.

Clutterbuck is reportedly not ready to announce his retirement from the ice, but he is staying in shape after training throughout the summer. However, there were no opportunities on the ice that would benefit his family, so he turned his attention to broadcasting instead. Clutterbuck will be the last former Islander to appear on the television show in an official capacity. While Thomas Hickey has become a rising star and even landed one Amazon Prime Gig this off season, others like it Matt Mouslon last year and Rick DiPietro took turns as studio analysts.

“I'm actually just looking forward to the start of the year,” Clutterbuck told Newsday. “And I’m looking forward to seeing the boys perform well. You made a good impression in the training camp. They had a tough training camp, which I think is good for a team. I think they'll be off to a great start. I’m excited to watch, I’m excited to be a part of it and stay with the organization in some capacity.”

Fellow Viertliners Matt Martin remains on a professional tryout (PTO) for now, but a contract offer seems unlikely in the long term. That wasn't an option for the 36-year-old Clutterbuck, who played in all 82 regular-season games, scoring seven goals and 19 assists. It was also a season full of milestones for Clutterbuck, as he reached the mark of 1,000 NHL games played and became the first player in NHL history to score 4,000 goals in his career.
