Christian McCaffrey Injury Update: NFL Insider Expresses Optimism for 49ers RB's Return

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is not yet playing this season and is reportedly suffering from bilateral Achilles tendonitis – meaning he has it in both legs. On Thursday, Albert Breer provided an update on McCaffrey's recovery.

“When he was feeling like himself in August, they upgraded him to the first game against the Jets.” Breer said. “Eventually his Achilles flared up so they ended up taking him out after the opener.

“He only started feeling like himself again last week, so they started training him in the last few days. The good news is that there have been no flare-ups. There were no setbacks. He feels good. So the Niners are optimistic about where he stands, but this is a scary deal for him. He is determined to play this year. I would say the next two or three weeks are crucial.”

McCaffrey reportedly traveled to Germany earlier this year to receive treatment for his condition. The three-time Pro Bowler can't return soon enough for the 49ers. Last season, McCaffrey had a record-setting year, posting 1,459 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, the most in the league.

The ground game wasn't the only area where McCaffrey found success. He also had 67 catches for 564 yards and seven scores. Given McCaffrey's current predicament and injury-riddled past, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan stressed the importance of protecting his star RB upon his return.

“We have to protect Christian from himself,” Shanahan said via The athlete. “He never likes to come out, no matter what the situation is, and I think that's something we could do to protect him better.” When you're that dangerous in the passing game, it's a little different.

“But if he's just taking the wear and tear of 20 runs and so on every game – and he's certainly good enough to do that and he's proven he can stay healthy – then you want to take some of that and give it to him.” it to other guys too.”

Although Christian McCaffrey's condition is improving, he will not be available for the 49ers on Thursday night. The 49ers will face the Seattle Seahawks at 8:15 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on Prime Video.
