NFC West notes: Seahawks, Hufanga, Rams

After that he remained in charge Seahawks have thrown their other pillar of football operations overboard, John Schneideris looking for Pete CarrollThe succession started earlier. According to ESPN.com's Brady Henderson, the 14-year-old Seattle HC's age (72 in Week 18 last season) led Schneider to work on prospects early, bringing the team to 36 years old Mike MacDonald.

While the move from Carroll to Macdonald — or a move to a much younger candidate — was ultimately expected, the Seahawks owners' decision gave Schneider full autonomy for the first time. Henderson adds that Schneider Carroll previously had the edge in making the final roster decision, and the takeover came, in a sense, after the aging HC discussed handing over that power to the GM in recent years. A January report also indicated that Carroll was considering retiring near the middle of the season, only to reverse course; The Seahawks' ownership decision solidified the move to a Schneider-run operation. Although Carroll and Schneider have rarely disagreed enough to require the coach to swing his decision-making hammer, it will be interesting to gauge the Seahawks' direction with the longtime GM in charge.

Carroll is technically a Seahawks consultant after his coaching stint, although the former Jets and Patriots HC wanted to coach again. He campaigned to keep the gig in Seattle. But Carroll has stayed away from the facility and Henderson added the late coach wanted to give Macdonald's regime space. Carroll had actually intended to pursue his advisory role, but backed out in the months that followed. Carroll, now 73, no longer has his sights set on another coaching job.

Here's the latest from the NFC West:

  • Both Carroll and Macdonald have signed Jason Peters Addition. The now 42-year-old tackle played sparingly for the Seahawks last season and came to help a team that was missing RT Abraham Lucas for much of the season. So it's that time again and George FantWhen the Seahawks put their second assignment in Seattle on hold, they called Peters back up to the practice squad. Peters was on the verge of becoming the first O-lineman to be on an active roster in a 21st NFL season and said he didn't expect to play again. Contact with Schneider has helped the All-Decade blocker's cause, Henderson adds, and he could be close to being reinstated to the Hawks' game-day squad.
  • Tre'Davious White is still on Aries' 53-man roster, but the team considered the eighth-year veteran a healthy scratch in Week 5. Classifying this as a decision by a trainer Sean McVay downgraded the free agency acquisition from starter to out of the mix entirely by Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic. This is an interesting decision, even if the Rams are active Darious Williams of IR and addresses the recently re-signed Ahkello Witherspoon as a starter (by the way Cobie Durant) for the first time this season. Despite his injury issues in the final years of his Bills tenure, White played 98% of Los Angeles' defensive snaps through the team's first four games. Pro Football Focus rated White as the NFL's seventh-worst cornerback this season, and the former Buffalo extension receiver has already been accused of allowing four touchdown receptions and a passer rating of 138.4 as the tight end this season. White, 29, has a one-year, $4.25 million contract.
  • Talanoa Hufanga is back on IR after suffering a wrist injury shortly after his ACL rehab odyssey ended. Injuries are slowing the All-Pro safety, but ESPN.com's Dan Graziano still sees him on the 49ers' expansion radar. Hufanga joins the cornerbacks Charvarius Ward And Deommodore Lenoir on the San Francisco expansion radar. The team may be more willing to commit to Lenoir than Ward, who is three years younger (at 25), but it's interesting that Hufanga is on the team's re-promotion radar. The former fifth-round pick rocketed into the All-Pro rankings in 2022 and would make sense as an extension candidate, but the 49ers paid up Brandon Aiyuk this off season and have one Brock Purdy Expansion on the horizon. Decisions must be made for a defense that also accommodates Dre Greenlaw in a contract year.
