Claire Kittle is far more than just a football star's wife, but she has no problem being labeled a WAG.

Kittle, 30, is married to the San Francisco 49ers star George Kittle Since April 2019, she has been using the sports acronym, which stands for “Wives and Girlfriends,” and is most commonly used to describe the partners of professional athletes.

“It's a short and quick term, you know?” said Kittle, who spoke with Us weekly through their partnership with Gatorade Hydration Booster. “What else would have the same effect? It somehow works!”

In 2010, the Equality and Human Rights Commission criticized the term WAG as “sexist”, “pejorative” and said it was often used to “address a group of women in a derogatory way”.

Kittle referred to the E! reality series WAGSwhich premiered in 2015 and featured a cast of wives and girlfriends of professional athletes. It also spawned the spin-offs WAGSMiami And WAGS Atlanta.

“Understandably, (the term) has some connotation because of the series,” Kittle said. “It was like a drama series. My experience was not like that. Especially not here.”

Kittle has developed a close community with the other women within the 49ers organization, including Kristin Juszczykthe full-back's wife Kyle JuszczykAnd Olivia Culporunning back's wife Christian McCaffrey.

“It’s incredible here,” enthused Kittle. “This is our eighth year, which in itself is a rarity for him to have played for a team in his career so far. We are just so blessed and grateful to be a part of this organization. They are truly top performers in the NFL and you hear that from other families across the board.”

On the topic of WAGs surrounding the NFL, Kittle said there is “absolutely no” rivalry between the 49ers team and the Chiefs team in Kansas City, which includes Taylor Swift and her growing group of soccer friends.

“Women are more involved in sports. They’re more interested in what’s going on,” Kittle noted. “This is great for all parties. I believe in empowering women. We can all be great, we can all be successful.”

Although Kittle joked, “If we don't play them, that's a different story.”

To prepare for game day, Kittle teamed up with Gatorade Hydration Booster to ensure she's ready for the moment.

“It’s a convenient little pack full of electrolytes and vitamins,” she explained. “It makes it easy to stay hydrated. You can put it in your handbag, especially when you're on the move. Or put it in your bag when traveling. I love it.”
