A powerful solar storm created a dazzling display in the night sky, allowing people in parts of the United States to see the rare northern lights.

However, the so-called solar storm also triggers a warning from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) about possible disruptions to power grids and satellite communications.

NOAA astronauts have captured images of the sky that show what happens when solar activity increases. Raj Dixit of the Sacramento Valley Astronomical Society said such special events are to be expected.

“There has been a solar storm triggered by a very intense eruption on the surface of the sun called a coronal mass ejection,” Dixit said. “When powerful gases explode on the Sun, they can cause severe electromagnetic disturbances all the way to Earth.”

The geomagnetic activity could potentially impact GPS, power grids and radio communications. There is cause for concern as people struggle to help those suffering after Hurricane Milton.

There are currently no reports of disruption in Florida, but the solar storm is expected to last until tomorrow evening. It could also trigger beautiful northern lights as far south as Alabama.

For those eager to witness the lights, Dixit recommends looking due north between 8:30 and 9 p.m. To view on your phone, increase the exposure and use night mode.
