Elon Musk finally unveils the prototype of a Tesla robotaxis

Elon Musk revealed Teslas Robotaxi, a so-called completely autonomous car that passengers can be described as on-demand transport. A fleet of Tesla robotaxis rolled in during the We, Robot conference event on October 10, 2024 in Los Angeles. Shortly afterwards you can see the staff leaving the building Vehicles while the cars form a line.

The full details of the features within and around the “self-driving” taxi are still unknown, but Elon Musk says Tesla plans to begin production of the robotaxi in the next “two years” and release around 2026. When That's what happens, passengers can book a self-driving Tesla car through a special app.

Autonomous cars with gullwing doors and a “metallic” look

Check out the show carOne of the first features of the Tesla Robotaxi is its double doors, which passengers open to get in and out of the self-driving vehicle. In terms of design, the exterior appears uniform with a metallic, gold-like color. It is almost two-tone, with this shade covering most of the vehicle and black accents on parts of the autonomous car.

The wheels can also steal the spotlight. Unlike typical tires with spokes, the Tesla Robotaxi's tires feature solid round plates with a carved circular depression in the center that resembles a giant speaker. At the front, the headlight appears as a single thin line that continues to radiate light intensity. Looking at the frame of the Tesla Robotaxi, it appears to combine elements from the company's other models and the Cybertruck.

No steering wheel in the cabin, just a display on the dashboard

The frame rises gently from the rear and peaks in the middle, providing ample headroom for the driver and passenger, before sloping down and becoming flatter towards the front. For this reason, the design of the hood appears to be independent of the rest of the autonomous car's frame. In the images of the robotaxi released by Tesla, there is no steering wheel in the cabin as the vehicle drives completely autonomously.

The shiny seats are boxy and resemble a quilted jacket, while the headrests resemble those of a doctor's or dentist's chair. There's a single screen on the dashboard, probably for driving information and possibly passenger infotainment. There is a single armrest between the two passengers, and due to the sloping front of the Robotaxi, Tesla passengers have plenty of legroom. Previously, Elon Musk shared that the release of the Tesla Robotaxi could begin in 2026 with a starting price of less than $30,000.
