If you miss October 11thTh During the voter registration period, same-day voter registration is available during early voting at central polling locations. If you register for early voting during the early voting period, you will be required to provide proof of residency with your name and current address. This can be a North Carolina driver's license, another photo ID issued by a government agency, a recent utility bill, a bank statement, a paycheck, or a government-issued document.

Duke students living on campus simply need to present a physical DukeCard or Duke Student Voter ID Card as proof of residency. Duke students living off-campus have the option to provide a Duke-issued document with their name and current address AND a physical DukeCard or Duke Student Voter ID Card or other of the above documents with their name and current address.


Voter ID card

Voters in North Carolina are now required to show photo ID when voting in person or by absentee ballot. Acceptable forms of identification may include:

  • North Carolina driver's license
  • NCDMV State ID Card for NC Residents (also called “Non-Operator ID Card”)
  • Driver's license or non-driver's license from another state, District of Columbia, or U.S. territory (only if voter registered in North Carolina within 90 days of the election)
  • US passport or US passport card
  • North Carolina voter photo ID issued by a county election authority
  • Student identification card from a college or university approved by the State Board of Elections
  • State or local government or charter school employee ID card approved by the State Board of Elections

The physical DukeCard and Duke Student Voter ID Card have been approved by the State Board of Elections as a valid form of photo identification for students. The DukeCard office provides a card free of charge to any student who needs one. The mobile DukeCard is not permitted as a valid voter ID. Voting on election day

On election day, voters will be assigned a polling station based on their home address. Students living on the East Campus will vote at Watts Elementary School, 700 Watts St., while West Campus residents can vote at the Patterson Recreation Center, 2614 Crest St. For more Election Day polling locations, visit the State Board of Elections website.

Supervisors are encouraged to be flexible in scheduling so that employees who cannot vote outside of normal work hours can do so before, during or after their assigned shift. Duke University's voting policies for employees can be found on the Duke Human Resources website.
