Two people were injured after a vehicle collided with a residence

The search continues for the occupants of an SUV who fled the scene of the accident

This story has been updated with additional information.

According to Sioux Falls police, two people were injured at the Brentwood Apartments in Sioux Falls early Thursday morning after a previously reported stolen SUV plowed completely into a first-floor apartment building at the Brentwood Apartments.

Traffic officials in charge of the investigation said the occupants of the vehicle had fled and the search for them was continuing.

A 3-year-old child who was sleeping on the couch in the residence's living room at the time of the accident is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and a 37-year-old man, also sleeping in the living room, has been released from the hospital with minor injuries.

Argus Leader reporters observed at the residence Thursday morning that he was back at the scene wearing a neck brace and an arm sling.

Sergeant. Travis Olsen said at the scene near West Third Street and Elmwood Avenue that the stolen vehicle, a 2011 Jeep Cherokee, was traveling south on a makeshift alley behind the complex when it collided with the first-floor apartment. The driver of the SUV drove head-on and completely into a wall in the living room before fleeing the scene. Witnesses said two other people got out of the car and also fled. The accident occurred around 4 a.m. on Thursday.

Olsen said the SUV with Minnehaha County license plates was stolen last week in Sioux Falls and alcohol is suspected to have played a role in the crash. He said investigators have some “potential suspects” but the family is not concerned about whether the hit-and-run was targeted.

“I don’t believe there is any ongoing danger to the public,” Olsen said.

It was suspected that the alley posed a danger to residents

A neighbor who lives in a house west of the apartment complex said the alley shouldn't be there. She did not want to be identified because of the ongoing investigation, but said the area used to be a “beautiful wall” between the apartment complex and her own backyard where children played.

Another neighbor, who also wished to remain anonymous for similar reasons, added that residents in the area lost power last month after another driver drove recklessly through the alley and hit a light pole.

Olsen said he spoke with Brentwood Apartments maintenance services about whether they would ban cars there and was told: “They've talked about putting up some signs but haven't done it yet,” Olsen said.

Aaron George Properties, which manages Brentwood Apartments, could not be reached for comment.

Department spokesman Sam Clemens said Thursday that there have been no arrests and that any eyewitness accounts would be helpful.
