Novak Djokovic reveals how Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer's retirements affected him – 'A big part of me stayed behind with them'

Novak Djokovic admitted that “a big part of me stayed with them” as he reflected on the impact the retirements of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer had on him.

The “Big Three” Djokovic, Nadal and Federer have dominated men's tennis for the past 20 years, but will soon have just one active member.

This leaves the 37-year-old Djokovic as the only remaining “Big Three” player on the ATP Tour.

About Nadal's retirement after reaching the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters, Djokovic said: “He was my biggest rival, the rivalry I had with him shaped me by far the most in my career.”

“We knew the moment would come sooner than later, but it was still a shock when it officially came. Even for Roger a few years ago when he announced his retirement and for Andy (Murray) this year, it's honestly a bit overwhelming for me. I don't know what to think of this.

“I still enjoy competing, but a part of me has stayed with them, a big part of me. So this is tough news for the tennis and sports world.

“Nadal is an inspiration to millions of children around the world and he can be very proud of his career.”

Djokovic and Nadal have faced each other 60 times, their last meeting being at the Paris Olympics.

“Your legacy will live on forever,” Djokovic wrote.

“Only you know what you had to endure to become an icon of tennis and sport in general. Thank you for pushing me to my limits so often in our rivalry, which has shaped me the most as a player.

“Her passion for representing Spain has always been remarkable. I wish you the best possible farewell in Malaga with the Spanish Davis Cup team. I will be there in person to pay respect to your outstanding career.”
