Maura Tierney just joined Law & Order — but did you know she guest-starred on the series in 1991?

Tierney recalled the plot of her 1991 episode in surprising detail

Maura Tierney remembers her first guest appearance on law and order in surprising detail, 33 years later.

The Emmy nominee and Golden Globe winner, 59, stopped by NBC Today on Friday, October 11th to discuss her new role as Lt. Jessica Brady to speak in the station's long-running police procedural.

But as host Savannah Guthrie pointed out, Tierney's story is with law and order dates back to 1991, when the then 26-year-old actress guest starred in a season two episode as the sister of a victim.

Tierney demonstrated a truly impressive recollection of the episode's plot. “The story was that my sister was an actress and my mother was a big stage mother, and the mother pushed the sister to do adult films,” she explained. “And then the sister committed suicide and the mother was charged with manslaughter.”

The hosts played excerpts from the episode for Tierney and Al Roker asked what advice she would give her younger self.

“Oh, I would just tell her to relax, man,” Tierney joked. “Look, you’ll be fine!”

Tierney also discussed what it was like to act opposite a tense scene Law & Order: SVU Star Mariska Hargitay, who guest starred in the final episode of law and order.

“It was great. It was only the second episode, so it was really fun for her to come along,” Tierney said. “She has a really big, very warm personality. Plus, everyone is thrilled when Olivia comes to us. It was really fun, and it’s fun that the characters…kind of compete against each other.”

And of course, you can't talk to Tierney without asking her to look back on it HEwhich just celebrated the 30th anniversary of its pilot episode in September. Tierney first appeared as Dr. 25 years ago next month. Abby Lockhart appeared on the series, appearing in a Thanksgiving episode in November 1999, before joining the series regular cast in February 2000.

“It’s a great, great show,” Tierney said HE. “And I came in halfway through, but I think it continued to go great. People saw it during the pandemic and all new generations learned about it. It's a really high quality, great show and I keep in touch with the last half of the cast. Linda Cardellini is a good friend of mine, Parminder (Nagra) and John Stamos.”

“It was a big deal,” she added. “I was with these people for eight years of my life, so it was a real bonding experience.”
