UEFA Nations League result: Virgil van Dijk sent off in dramatic draw

The Netherlands earn a dramatic draw against Hungary

Virgil van Dijk was sent off as Denzel Dumfries saved a point for the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League as they played to a 1-1 draw with Hungary at the Puskas Arena on Friday.

In an evenly balanced first 20 minutes, Hungary came closest to a breakthrough when Roland Sallai hit the post after a corner from Dominik Szoboszlai, but it didn't take long for the home side to open the scoring.

A menacing attack followed just after half an hour, with Zsolt Nagy hitting a wonderful cross from the left to the unmarked Sallai, who made no mistake and fired a careful volley past Bart Verbruggen and at the back post.

The visitors had a great chance to equalize when they were awarded an indirect free kick in the penalty area following a mix-up between the Hungarian goalkeeper and Szoboszlai, but Denes Dibusz made up for his lack of concentration with a save from Cody Gakpo's effort, clinging on in a busy five- Yard area stuck to the ball.

The Netherlands pushed for an equalizer for much of the second half and came close through the efforts of Stefan de Vrij and Tijjani Reijnders, but Hungary held firm and tried to claim their first ever win over their Dutch opponents.

Liverpool's Van Dijk received two yellow cards in as many minutes and was sent off as the visitors were reduced to ten players, but an equalizer came just minutes later when Dumfries headed home from a Gakpo cross.

With not much time left to find a late winner, the game in Budapest ended in complete surprise.
