Colorado can't feel accomplished after achieving Deion's black and gold game goal

Deion Sanders announced at Folsom Field on April 27 that Colorado football was the real deal Goal for the 2024 season was to make a bowl game and win at least six games. The goal was a tribute to 98-year-old superfan Peggy Coppom.

With 4:1 after the first game week, the Buffs are ahead of schedule.

Coach Prime emphasized to his players that they had not achieved anything yet; even after Colorado's most impressive win of the “Prime Time” era against UCF, a 48-21 victory over the Knights in Orlando.

“You all think you’ve arrived, don’t you? You didn’t do anything, man,” Sanders said via Wealthy media. “Because when you asked me the same thing, they said, 'Coach, you all do this and that.' We're supposed to be here.

The job is not yet completed. Four games doesn't get you to a bowl game. The Buffs know this all too well after a promising season in Boulder turned into disaster by the end of the 2023 season.

This time, however, it feels different. Colorado's best win was against TCU in Week 1 last year, but the Horned Frogs didn't prove much of a challenge. The way the Buffs beat Baylor and UCF seems to indicate a team that can win every game for the rest of the season.

You probably won't keep track. A disappointment against K-State, Utah or Texas Tech seems inevitable. Maybe Oklahoma State will figure it out by the end of the season. Or maybe Kansas or Cincinnati are playing spoiler.

But there's a serious chance CU is in contention for something meaningful by the end of the season. At least that's what it looks like now. Things could change when the team feels the work is done, and it may not take long for this to happen.

It's easy to imagine that the Buffs have completely different motivations after winning six games. Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter may be considering NFL futures, and other players may also be eyeing their next move. If they play in Colorado, they could increase their NIL numbers in the portal next year. Shedeur and Hunter may not be the only pro prospects on the roster.

There could be a lot of anticipation if this team wins enough to qualify for a bowl but loses enough to not qualify for the College Football Playoff. For all we know, a Big 12 champion with eight or nine wins might not win enough to make the 12-team CFP field.

Colorado can't give up when it seems like there's not much left to play for. Seemingly overnight, this team has built a passionate fan base that spans the entire country.

There will always be something to play for.
