Utah's RB Micah Bernard scores the first touchdown against ASU

TEMPE, Arizona. – Utah football desperately needed a touchdown in the third quarter against Arizona State and Micah Bernard gave the Utes exactly what they needed.

In the first half, Utah failed to get into the end zone and trailed 13-9. Bernard's third-quarter score gave the Utes the lead for the first time since early in the first quarter.

Through three quarters, Bernard was Utah's only consistent source of offense with 16 carries for 106 yards.

Early in the first quarter, quarterback Cam Rising suffered a hit and fell awkwardly on his left leg. From then on, the senior QB looked a step slow and all of his throws seemed to come up short.

When in doubt, feed the jam. That’s exactly what the Utes did.

Unfortunately, Utah's lead didn't last long.

The Sun Devils needed just four plays to go 75 yards and take the lead right back.

Once again, it was up to Rising, Bernard and the Utah offense to make a statement.

Three thoughts on game day from Utes insider Steve Bartle

1. Believe it when we see it.

According to Action Network's Brett McMurphy, Cam Rising is set to return and will face Arizona State.

Utah QB Cam Rising will begin Friday at Arizona State, sources tell Action Network. Rising hasn't played since Sept. 7 against Baylor, when he injured the ring finger of his throwing hand and required stitches. Rising has missed Utah’s last three games.” – Brett McMurphy

According to multiple sources, Rising has taken over nearly all practice representations since Tuesday, including yesterday's final walkthrough before the team hit the road.

Despite the report, many won't believe it until they see it. The typical signs all point to his return, but fans are rightly hesitant after the last few weeks.

2. A difficult challenge, could be harder

Kenny Dillingham placed a big emphasis on improving the running game this offseason. It paid off. Arizona State has a fantastic running back in Cam Skatteboo and a much more physical offensive line than last year. They also have a dual-threat quarterback who will draw defense attention.

So Utah will face one of the top rushing attacks in the Big 12 tonight. Utah will likely be without some key contributors, which will make the challenge even more difficult. Limiting the run remains the top priority in this game and will require the best of this defensive unit.

Van Fillinger needs to come up big for the Utes tonight. The Sun Devils have had great success running the right side of the line, Fillinger needs to be disciplined and strong.

3. Dorian Singer vs. Keith Abney

Looking at the numbers, Abney has done well this season. He has allowed 13 of 24 completion targets, generating 202 yards and a touchdown. Abney has no interceptions, but he is credited with four pass breakups. He was also flagged for defensive pass interference four times this season.

Dorian Singer has emerged as the best pass-catching option for the Utes. He caught a total of 26 balls for 355 yards and was a big presence on the outside. He has also suffered three defensive pass interference penalties this season.

Singer should play a big role regardless of who faces him, but Utah could be looking for exactly that matchup all night long.
