Cal student Daniel Villasenor relives the moment of winning 0,000 on ESPN's “College GameDay.”

BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) — The 19-year-old civil engineering student who hit a $100,000 field goal during ESPN's “College GameDay” broadcast in Berkeley over the weekend shares how he scored the game-winning goal. Daniel Villasenor's family and his former football coach also share his enthusiasm.

“He scored a couple of goals that kids today call bangers!” smiles Dario Fabian, coach of the Livermore High School Cowboys football team.

Fabian has fond memories of Daniel's time as captain of the team and says his leadership qualities and determination were evident despite him being a “quiet” teenager. One example came when Fabian was assessing players for junior or varsity training.

“He said, 'Yeah, I'll show you!' And he showed me. He likes to be challenged and loves challenges,” said Fabian.

After standing in line before midnight Friday to take part in the GameDay broadcast, the now Cal sophomore was chosen from thousands to kick a field goal and win thousands.

UC Berkeley student Daniel Villasenor hit a 33-yard field goal on his second attempt during ESPN's “College GameDay” broadcast Saturday morning.

“I thought there was zero percent chance of it happening,” Daniel said.

“He called us early in the morning, maybe 5:30 a.m., and I was completely freaked out. Why is he calling us so early in the morning!? He hadn't told us he was going to get in line or anything, so I “I had no idea,” said his mother, Soraya Villasenor. But when she realized he would be on national television, she immediately began calling her family to tell them the good news.

We asked Daniel about the moment host Pat McAfee pointed out his choice of shoes.

“These are about 100 years old but have some minor wear, but they still work for me!” Daniel said, pointing to his worn Vans slippers. The sole of the right shoe practically fell off.

“I wore these shoes specifically because I didn’t want to be picked, but somehow it happened,” Daniel shrugged.

When his moment came, Daniel said his nerves got the better of him and the kick went too far to the right. Deprived of sleep and subsisting on a single donut, he was unexpectedly given a second chance. Up for grabs: $100,000 from Vans and $600,000 for Hurricane Helene relief from The Walt Disney Company, parent company of ESPN and ABC7.

“I can do better, I thought!” he said.

Daniel was full of adrenaline and managed the second kick.

His triumph and excitement beamed across the UC campus and television screen. Daniel moved his arms and jumped up and down.

Mom says she's gone crazy.

“It just gives me goosebumps, even if you watch it over and over again you can feel the energy coming through!” she beamed.

Daniel described the moment as “just pure joy and emotion.” He continued, “I was just so happy that I had to let it out somehow!”

VIDEO: ESPN's College Gameday: Cal-Miami matchup turns into slugfest and rivalry on ABC7

Cal hosts ESPN College GameDay on Saturday and here at ABC7 there's a rivalry between Cal and Miami.

ABC7 News asked Daniel how he's dealing with his 15 minutes of fame. Things like a tweet from KNBR radio suggesting the 49ers could use a backup kicker.

“I don't think I could handle the pressure anywhere near that much!” he said.

For now, he's just concentrating on his final semester of civil engineering and figuring out how to spend his newfound fortune.

“I still don’t know for sure. World Cup tickets? Maybe that and most likely the tuition fees too,” Daniel said.

However, one thing is certain.

“I’m so grateful to Pat McAfee for everyone on the show, especially everything, especially the donation to hurricane relief,” Daniel said. “A big, important cause that I know will help a lot of people.”
