Recap: Pastrnak's record puts the Bruins past the Kings 2-1 in postgame

The Boston Bruins defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at TD Garden thanks to David Pastrnak's overtime goal.

The exciting sequence was driven by the Bruins' youth, with Matt Poitras and Mason Lohrei equally contributing to the winning play.

Here are the highlights of the game!

First period:

Goalless

Second period:

After some big saves on the penalty kill by Jeremy Swayman and with just seconds left in the game, Trevor Moore scored on Trevor Moore without anyone marking him at 5:22 of the second period. 1-0 Kings.

The Bruins' power play was short-lived as Pavel Zacha had to be brought down for 4-on-4 hockey. But with a little more space, Brad Marchand threw a wrist shot onto the pads of Darcy Kuemper, which set up a huge rebound for Elias Lindholm, who fired a one-timer past the glove side of Kuemper at 16:50 of the second period. 1:1 game.

Third period:

No goals

Over time:

Matt Poitras passed a backhand pass to David Pastrnak, who left a pass for Mason Lohrei, who entered the zone. Lohrei then passed a pass right back to Pastrnak in the slot, who took a wrist shot deep past Kuemper at 3:07 of overtime. Final score: 2-1 Bruins.

Game notes

  • If there's anything to take away from today's win, it's that the young people are doing well and can make a difference. Playing in his first regular season game since January 25th, Matt Poitras looked at his best, according to Jim Montgomery – and we agree. Additionally, Mason Lohrei recovered after being a healthy scratch and made the perfect pass to Pastrnak on top for the win.
  • Jim Montgomery said he was impressed with Lohrei's play and that Poitras' return – and what he did in it – was “special.”
  • Pastrnak may have scored the OT game-winning goal, but the goal was actually the result of perfect performance from all three players on the ice. The seamless passing between Lohrei, Poitras and Pastrnak made the goal seem effortless.
  • With the goal, Pastrnak made it three goals in three games. Are we going 82 for 82?
  • While a win is a win, the Bruins are still waiting for their first full 60-minute game. The offense has been present in the last two games, scoring ten goals in the first two games, but today they had a harder time adapting to that aspect of their game.
  • The lack of performance started in the first period with failed power plays and low shots in the second period. “The last six carried us and gave us the opportunity to stay in the game and get to overtime,” Montgomery said.
  • Elias Lindholm's equalizer also gave the Bruins some life for his team, which is currently on the fifth point in a three-game point streak. More impressive, however, was Marchand's pass to Kuemper's pads, which led a long rebound almost perfectly to Lindholm.
  • The Bruins struggled on the power play this afternoon, going 0 for 5. They couldn't hold up time in the O-zone and at times it looked like the Kings were the only ones on the power play. Overall, however, no one was able to take advantage of the man advantage in the game, as the Kings also went 0-for-5. SCOC asked Brad Marchand how concerned he was about the power play and whether it was just a matter of needing time to build chemistry.

Marchand said: “We had a really good game on the power play last game. We don't really look at the fact that we had five clean sheets, we look at the fact that we could have scored three or four goals. We weren't particularly good tonight. They (Kings) have a very, very aggressive penalty kill. We didn't do a good job of managing it at the right time. So I thought we were a little better there. But I thought we were really good last game.”

  • SCOC also asked him about Elias Lindholm on the PK and his chemistry with him when shorthanded and in 4v4 mode.

Marchand said: “I don't know how many penalties I'll take this year, but we did a good job today. So hopefully when we’re out there together, we can continue to find that chemistry.”

  • Swayman made 33 saves in the win, for a save percentage of .971…that's more true!
  • The Bruins return to the TD Garden ice on Monday, October 14th for another 1 p.m. start and their second game of the season against the Florida Panthers.
