Before the game

Syracuse will play its first road game of the season against North Carolina State as it looks to improve to 5-1 (2-1). With a win, the Orange should move one step closer to their first top-25 appearance of the Fran Brown era.

The Orange will look to play a rare flawless game on special teams after giving up two blocked punts against UNLV last week. The Orange have also had problems this season with missed field goal attempts, kickoffs thrown out of bounds and a failed onsides kick recovery.

Head coach Fran Brown said the Orange have simplified their approach to addressing the punt blocking issue, with Jayden Oh taking over field goal duties from Brady Denaburg.

On the bright side, Kyle McCord will look to continue to be one of the most productive passers in the country against a North Carolina State team that has struggled.

The Wolfpack (3-3, 0-2) was considered a dark candidate to make the College Football Playoff this season, but was never able to live up to expectations this preseason. While Carter-Finley Stadium is notoriously a difficult venue to play in, it will be interesting to see how much energy the sellout crowd brings, especially with the school's students on fall break.

Quarterback Grayson McCall, a key offseason transfer from Coastal Caolina, has been injured twice and is not expected to play. True freshman CJ Bailey was adequate as a backup, but neither quarterback was able to get the Wolfpack offense going.

However, NC State's bigger problem this season has been its run defense. Normally a strength under head coach Dave Doeren, this year's version is giving up 158.7 yards per game. That includes two top-25 opponents (Tennessee and Clemson) each rushing for more than 250 yards.

Syracuse's running game hasn't been great this season, but it turned in its best performance of the year against UNLV. It will also be interesting to see how the Orange fare in the run game after losing two starting defenders this season. The Orange are still without linebacker Marlowe Wax and wide receiver Yazeed Haynes.

Syracuse is 3-13 all-time against NC State and has lost its last four visits to Carter-Finley Stadium.
