'SNL' rekindles a romantic relationship between JD Vance and Tim Walz in a parody of the vice presidential debate

It wouldn't be a real debate if Saturday Night Live didn't skewer it.

Days after Sen. JD Vance and Gov. Tim Walz shared the stage for their vice presidential duel, SNL brought back his campaign impersonators to mock their performances. The twist? As Maya Rudolph's Kamala Harris looks on in horror, Walz (Jim Gaffigan) and Vance (Bowen Yang) come dangerously close to a bromance.

The spark comes after the duo gives their opening speech and Yang's Vance expertly dodges a series of questions – leading to an unexpected compliment from Gaffigan's Walz.

“Wow, this guy is good,” Gaffigan remarks, as Walz notes in the parody. “He has an answer for everything!”

Surprised, Yangs Vance responds warmly: “Thank you. That is very nice.”

As the fake Vance and the fake Walz exchange smiles, host Norah O'Donnell (Heidi Gardner) appears uncomfortable. “I’m not sure why you guys connect,” she says, “but let’s move on.”

Later, the vice presidential nominees strengthen their bond when the skit moves on to mocking Walz's memorable debate mistake, in which he awkwardly addresses his claim that he was in Hong Kong during the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre .

“I think what happened is I went to Epcot,” Gaffigan’s Walz explains. “You can travel all over the world and I had a few in the Germany section and I thought I was going to China. Whatever, I’m an idiot.”

He then points to Vance and says, “But I'm sure that guy has some things he'd like to step away from, too.”

“He’s right,” Yang’s Vance replies seriously. Then they add in sync: “This is an area where we have a lot in common.”

close your eyes, SNLVance and Walz slowly raise their hands to touch each other across the split screen.

Meanwhile, at home, Rudolph's Kamala is understandably worried as she watches the whole thing unfold with her husband Doug Emhoff (Andy Samberg). After a dramatic wine spit shot, she complains, “Why are they friends!? Why are they vibrating!?”

But in the end — after an interruption by Dana Carvey, who plays a confused, rambling, ice cream-obsessed President Joe Biden — Harris celebrates a victory. As the debate comes to an end, Walz asks Vance to admit that Donald Trump lost the 2020 presidential election, to which he refuses to give a clear answer.

“Honey, we did it,” says Samberg as Emhoff. “We understood the tone. What do the pollsters say?”

“This is a great victory,” responds Rudolph. “It didn’t make any difference!”
