Novak Djokovic vs Jannik Sinner LIVE: Current score and updates from the blockbuster final of the Shanghai Masters

Rafael Nadal announces his retirement from professional tennis after 23 years

Novak Djokovic is aiming for his 100th title in a blockbuster Shanghai Masters final against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.

Djokovic is aiming to become only the third man to reach a hundred titles in the Open era, following Jimmy Connors' 109 and Roger Federer's 103. The 37-year-old defeated Taylor Fritz in the semifinals on Saturday to secure his only title so far this season, his long-awaited Olympic gold medal in Paris.

The 23-year-old Sinner has beaten Djokovic in their last two meetings, in last year's Davis Cup final and in the semifinals of the Australian Open earlier this season, the tournament that led to his Grand Slam breakthrough. The Italian has already won six tournaments this season, including the Australian Open and the US Open, and secured first place at the end of the year.

It promises to be an epic final with tennis history at stake. Follow Shanghai Masters results updates in our live blog below.

We haven't seen a deuce point in the middle of the first set, let alone a break point. But it feels like Sinner has more control on the serve so far.

The world No. 1 jumps to 30-0 before Djokovic takes a superb point, earning the fruits of his attacking play by pushing Sinner behind the baseline.

However, Sinner ends the game without much fuss and finds another big serve to hold. 3-3.

Djokovic expresses his frustration to the referee when he has to challenge a ball from Sinner that lands a good foot behind the baseline.

“How can you not see that?” he asks. Djokovic lands the first serve and uses the game to stay ahead.

And Roger Federer is here too! A star-studded crowd for this Shanghai Masters final.

It was a first-class start to the rallies from both players, which is what you would expect from two of the cleanest hitters in the game.

Djokovic looks super aggressive too – hitting back a second serve to make it 30-30! This came after Sinner thought he had an ace – but the referee incorrectly ruled it out.

Djokovic roars in frustration as he makes a forehand error into the net at 30-30, and here's why. Sinner lands a powerful first serve down the middle to keep the ball and takes away the chance.

Sinner puts Djokovic under pressure early by striking early and asking his opponent to move wide. Djokovic seems a bit uneasy as he scores the equalizer at 0:30.

Djokovic finds the crucial serve to get back to 30-30 and then produces a nice attack point to step in and parry the forehand winner past Sinner.

It's no surprise that these guys scored some long points in the opening game. Sinner tries to move Djokovic around the baseline and push his opponent far out through the opening of the court.

However, Djokovic holds in the middle with an excellent serve.

Djokovic serves as a starting point for us. This should be a blast, although Djokovic will attract a lot of attention after appearing to struggle slightly in yesterday's semi-final win over Taylor Fritz.

Carlos Alcaraz sits in the second row! Obviously an interested observer.

“Part of me went with them” – Djokovic reflects as Nadal joins the “Big Four” retirees

Earlier this week, Novak Djokovic said he was overwhelmed by the news that he would be the only active member of the Big Four.

With Roger Federer and Andy Murray already leaving the sport, Rafael Nadal announced on Thursday that he would also be hanging up his racket at the end of the season.

“We knew this moment would come sooner than later, but it's still a shock,” Djokovic said.

“Also for Roger a few years ago when he announced his retirement and also for Andy this year. It's a bit overwhelming for me. I don't know what to make of it. I still enjoy competing, but a part of me has stayed with them, a big part of me.”

And yet he's still out there fighting for titles.
