The New Orleans Saints have struggled with numerous injury issues to start the 2024 NFL season, and it appears they suffered another major injury on offense in Week 6.

Chris Olave left the game in the first quarter after suffering an injury on his first catch of the day. The experienced winger shot himself in the head when he briefly received the ball and appeared to be dazed afterwards. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Saints medical staff quickly attended to him before he got up and went to the medical tent for treatment.

Here's what you should know about Olave's injury and what impact it could have on the Saints, who are already without top quarterback Derek Carr and several offensive linemen.

Update on Chris Olave's injury

Olave suffered an apparent head injury on the Saints' first offensive attack in their Week 6 game against the Buccaneers.

Olave caught a 5-yard dumpoff from rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler on a second-and-15 play. The third-year receiver turned toward the sideline to pass Tykee Smith but was hit hard by cornerback Zyon McCollum, who was guarding the sideline.

Olave fumbled after taking the hit, and Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. picked it up and returned it for a touchdown. Meanwhile, Olave lagged behind the piece and appeared dazed. Tampa Bay's medical staff immediately came to his aid before New Orleans' staff came across the field to treat him.

Olave was able to get up and leave the field on his own. He was treated in the blue medical tent before going to the locker room to be checked for a concussion.

The Saints announced in the second quarter that Olave had suffered a concussion and would miss the remainder of the game. His status for the Week 7 “Thursday Night Football” game in New Orleans could also be in question.

Who is Chris Olave's backup on the Saints WR depth chart?

Olave's replacement is Bub Means. The fifth-round rookie out of Pitt started Week 6 with just one goal in four career games, but made his first career catch against the Buccaneers after replacing Olave.

The Saints will only have four healthy receivers on the roster, Olave is out. They are as follows:

Rattler can also count on the Saints' tight end room, currently led by Juwan Johnson and Foster Moreau, to serve as his top targets.

Chris Olave stats

Olave had just one catch for five yards before suffering a concussion against the Buccaneers. He entered Sunday with 22 catches for 275 yards and one touchdown this season.
