“Mommy's Not Well”: Kyle Larson's son Owen endures a horrific flip that scares Katelyn

Racers flying around wildly during the race are not a pleasant sight for spectators. Although safety mechanisms have improved dramatically in the modern age of motorsports, it is not enough to prevent falls or rollovers. And unfortunately, that's exactly what Kyle Larson's 9-year-old son Owen experienced when he competed in a dirt racing event.

Larson's wife Katelyn even shared the photos of the nasty flip Owen endured on her Instagram account. Although Owen suffered no injuries following the accident, the incident worried her mother Katelyn.

Owen followed in Kyle Larson's footsteps and got behind the wheel of a sprint car, as shown in the video shared by Katelyn. The 9-year-old was outside the top five positions and therefore tried to get past his competitors on the course by missing the finish. His first attempt, the backstretch, was thwarted, but he wouldn't break free that easily.

As Owen immediately took the lead on the dirt oval track, he tried to keep up with the pack on the inside lane. However, he missed the entrance and came into contact with the same car that he had collided with on the first attempt. This time his winged sprint car was badly hit, and Owen rolled over in his race car before coming to an immediate stop at the front.

The race was quickly red flagged and the safety crew quickly rushed to help the young driver. Fortunately, it was only a racing accident and, despite the severity of the impact, Owen was fine after hitting the safety fence. His mother Katelyn had her heart in her mouth after witnessing the crash: “Owen is fine, Mom is not.” She shared on her Instagram stories.

With Owen Wilson coming out of the flip-safe, the incident will be a big realization for the young racer. Young Owen Wilson follows in the footsteps of the “Cyclist” and wants to take on his father’s skills on dirt roads. He has been successful so far, earning his first win of 2021 in the Beginner Box Stock at Millbridge Speedway. Kyle Larson may have some advice for his young son after the move, but for now the Larson family's focus would now shift to the all-important playoff race for HMS star Charlotte Roval.

Kyle Larson isn't out of the woods yet

The driver of the No. 5 Chevy is in a good position for this weekend. He has a buffer of 52 points and also a good starting position, P6. But yesterday's Xfinity Series playoff race should serve as an example to drivers that relying on points to advance in the playoffs is not the best strategy. Sheldon Creed and Riley Herbst found themselves in a similar situation early in the race, but all it took was a few crashes to derail their playoff journey.

Although Larson has a Roval win under his belt in his 2021 championship year, his last two starts in the Next Gen car have not been great. In the two starts he made at Roval with the new car, the best he achieved was a 14th place. This is indeed concerning if you are a Kyle Larson fan. Not to mention, the chaos NASCAR has caused with the reconfiguration could change Larson's fortunes.

The good news for the No. 5 team is that they have a good starting position and can keep a clean nose in the early stages. But it won't be a surprise if they choose to fight for stage points rather than victory. That was an issue for playoff drivers in 2024.
