The Aurora Borealis can appear here this evening and Sunday

Topline

Some select states in the northern United States have a chance to see the Northern Lights on Saturday evening, according to an update from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that predicts an increase in solar activity through Sunday. (UPDATE: Here's one updated forecast for Sunday.)

Important facts

The agency is forecasting a KP index of three for Saturday night and four for Sunday night, meaning the northern lights could be visible if “you're in the right place.”

Unlike earlier this week, there is no warning of a geomagnetic storm, which contributed to unusually strong auroras as far away as Texas on Thursday.

The line of sight Sunday evening extends into central South Dakota and southern Minnesota, but the closer viewers are to the line, the less chance they have of seeing the Northern Lights.
