Lions quarterback Jared Goff has a chance at history in Dallas

ALLEN PARK – Jared Goff is broke and on the verge of making more NFL history.

The Detroit Lions quarterback returns from the bye with a streak of 19 consecutive completions, leaving him just seven points shy of setting the all-time record heading into Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

“Gosh, I knew you were going to start doing that,” quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell said before practice Friday.

Sorry about the possible jinx, Mark, but Goff has put a tumultuous start behind him and put together one of the best quarterback heaters of all time. Two games ago at Arizona he completed all 12 passes in the first half, the following week against Seattle he missed nothing at all and completed all 18 passes against the Seahawks. The previous NFL record for most completions in a game without putting a ball on the turf was surpassed by Kurt Warner with 10 points.

Now Goff is closing in on the all-time record for consecutive completions total, set by Nick Foles, Marcus Mariota, Philip Rivers and Ryan Tannehill, all of whom scored 25 straight.

“That was great (against Seattle),” receiver Jameson Williams said. “It's a bit like playing Madden as a rookie. You really shouldn't make too many mistakes. We played good ball. However, I think the running game helped a lot. Jahmyr (Gibbs) and (David Montgomery), O-line, how we started, we started running. Then they converted into the passing game. Both sides really help each other in this situation. And you know, we just have a good quarterback and he just does what he does.”

Goff is catching fire after a mixed start to the season, including throwing two picks in a Week 2 loss to Tampa. Detroit scored just 16 points that day, and although Goff threw for 307 yards, it took 52 pass attempts. For two weeks under pressure, he had the worst PFF passing grade in the league.

But he has become more heated in recent weeks and has continued to perform under duress. Against pressure, he was 5 of 5 passes for 67 yards against the Seahawks, one of which required a spin move in the pocket before he fired a bullet over the middle to Tim Patrick. The play went 28 yards.

Goff is now completing 71.0% of his passes this season, which is on pace for a career high and ranks fourth in the league overall. Only Jayden Daniels of Washington (77.1%), Joe Burrow of Cincinnati (72.3%) and Baker Mayfield of Tampa (71.9%) were more accurate.

“He played really well last week,” Brunell said. “As you know, the first three weeks were a bit of a slow start, as is often the case, even with good offenses. I think that was our experience last year. Hopefully last week was the start of something where we can feel pretty good about going out and getting some points. I think we'll have some momentum going into this game and hopefully we can keep that going. We'll see. The guys are training well, we are healthy and have a quarterback who plays well and makes good decisions with the ball.”
