Jared Goff is on the verge of NFL history

Jared Goff is on a hot streak.

The last time the Detroit Lions quarterback left the field, he did so after throwing the NFL's version of a perfect game. Goff completed all 18 of his pass attempts in Detroit's Week 4 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, setting a new record for passes in a single game without a completion. Goff broke a record set by Kurt Warner, who hit all ten passes for the Arizona Cardinals against the Houston Texans in 2005.

Dating back to Detroit's Week 3 win over the Cardinals, Goff enters Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys having completed 19 consecutive passes, six shy of the NFL record of 25.

What could be more remarkable than Goff being on the cusp of this success, but the four quarterbacks who currently share the record: Marcus Mariota, Philip Rivers, Nick Foles and Ryan Tannehill.

Update: There will be no recording as Goff's first pass attempt against the Cowboys was incomplete.

However, his second victory went to Tim Patrick by a large margin. A few plays later, David Montgomery stormed into the end zone, giving the Lions an early 7-3 lead over the Cowboys.

Tannehill completed 25 straight passes over a two-game stretch in 2015, and Mariota also caught 25 straight passes over two games in 2018. Both Foles and Rivers caught 25 consecutive passes in games during the 2018 season, Foles against Washington and Rivers against the Cardinals this season.

However, according to offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, opening Sunday's game against Dallas with some easy throws for Goff is “not even in my thought process,” the reported Detroit Free Press this week.

“No,” Johnson said, “we’re playing along.”

However, given the way Johnson describes his quarterback, this record might just be natural.

“He knows exactly what we’re looking for,” Johnson said. “He also knows what the bad looks are. He knows why every play is called and the Premier knows what kind of play it's going to be, but he also knows what could cause us problems and so that's just his general awareness of how to do things right now “If I can't quite plan things out right, it was really impressive.”
