Buffalo Bills running back James Cook suffered an injury late in the fourth quarter against the Houston Texans in Week 5.

The star running back left the game after stomping his foot on the ground while diving for a catch on the sideline. Cook did not play in the final round of the game.

Cook is off to an excellent start to the 2024 season. Since Joe Brady took over playcalling, he has been the identity of the Bills' offense alongside Josh Allen. He is a clear focal point of the offense and received 22 touches in the game against Houston before his injury.

Here's the latest on the Bills running back's status:

James Cook returned to practice Saturday and plans to play in the Bills' “Monday Night Football” game against the New York Jets.

Head coach Sean McDermott told reporters he was injured during the game against Houston.

Cook's injury apparently occurred late in the fourth quarter when he jumped and tried to catch himself on the sideline. His left foot hits the grass, where he could have injured his toe.

The team has not provided any further updates on the extent of the possible sprain at this time.

Bills RB depth chart

The Bills have two running backs on the current roster behind Cook. Veteran Ty Johnson and rookie fourth-round pick Ray Davis will be asked to step in if Cook misses time. Davis is expected to be the next man up, although Johnson played all three snaps after Cook was sidelined against the Texans.

Johnson is in his seventh season and is likely a more trustworthy option in pass protection and passing situations. Coming out of Kentucky, Davis was considered a three-down back because of his size and ability to run between the tackles.

James Cook statistics

  • 309 rushing yards (15th)
  • 4 rushing TDs (tied for 2nd)
  • 11 receptions (23rd among RBs)
  • 123 receiving yards (14th among RBs)
