The Cowboys pushed to replace Mike McCarthy with a legendary coach after struggling

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most traditional franchise teams in sports and with that comes great expectations. This season, the Cowboys have struggled to play consistent, winning football.

After the Cowboys' disastrous loss to the Detroit Lions, FanSided's Lior Lampert listed the coaches the Cowboys should consider to replace Mike McCarthy. One of those coaches was legendary head coach Bill Belichick.

“After failing to land a job during the past offseason coaching period, Belichick will try again in 2025,” Lamport wrote. “And with McCarthy’s future in question, Dallas is a viable option.”

The Cowboys' signing of Belichick could spark a power struggle. During his legendary career as coach of the New England Patriots, Belichick served as general manager and head coach.

“In all 28 years that Belichick has been a head coach, he has also served as his team's de facto general manager. If his track record is any indication, he will want to take on a similar role the next time he lands,” Lampert wrote. “Yet that responsibility falls to Jones, who firmly believes that no one could do the job better than him.”

The Cowboys likely won't fire McCarthy in the middle of the season, but the league has already seen an unlikely firing of Robert Saleh. The Cowboys are 3-3 winless at home. McCarthy's spot is already hot and failure in the playoffs could be the final straw.

Obviously, McCarthy isn't the only person responsible for the Cowboys' problems. Dak Prescott has not lived up to the quality of his new contract.

Belichick won six Super Bowls as the Patriots' head coach while also serving as general manager. Many consider him to be the greatest coach of all time.

“Belichick is a free agent as he explores his post-coaching career — as a broadcaster,” Lampert wrote. “Dallas could (theoretically) replace McCarthy with him at any time, although it seems far-fetched that they would make such a drastic change in the middle of the season. But for what it's worth, the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach/manager seemed open to a reduced front office role before parting ways with the New England Patriots.”
