The weather in Utah changes from summer to winter with impending storms

Weather across Utah will take a dramatic turn later this week as summer-like conditions give way to fall and even winter weather. Here's what to expect each day this week.

TODAY

Sunny skies are expected in western Utah, with a few isolated showers and thunderstorms possible in eastern Utah. Smoke from the Yellow Lake Fire will move into the central and northern Wasatch Front during the afternoon and evening, creating a visible haze. High temperatures will reach the low 80s in northern Utah and the upper 80s in the south.

TUESDAY

Sunny skies will blanket the state. Highs will be similar to Monday's, with low 80s north and upper 80s south.

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday will see windy conditions, particularly across northern Utah, as a cold storm approaches the state. Skies will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy, temperatures will remain warm, reaching the low 80s in northern Utah and mid 80s in the south.

THURSDAY

A powerful cold front will move through northern Utah through Thursday morning and then spread across the rest of the state. Rain showers start early in the day. Snow depths will initially be high but will fall as cold air moves in behind the front. By Thursday night, snow levels will drop to 5,500 to 6,000 feet, and wintry driving conditions are possible above that elevation. Highs will only reach the mid-60s in northern Utah, while southern Utah will remain warm, around 80 degrees, until the cold front arrives later in the day.

FRIDAY

Scattered rain and mountain snow showers are expected, with some snow possible on higher benches. Snow levels will remain between 5,500 and 6,000 feet Friday morning, creating potentially wintry driving conditions for areas above that elevation. In many regions, the first frost of the season may occur on Friday morning, so gardens should be harvested beforehand. Areas on the Wasatch Front and lower Washington County may experience patchy frost. Morning temperatures will start in the 20s and 30s for most areas, with the Wasatch Front starting the day in the upper 30s to low 40s, while southern Utah will start around 50 degrees to the south.

SATURDAY

Saturday morning will also be chilly, with many areas falling back into the 20s and 30s. Daytime highs will be slightly warmer than Friday, with northern Utah reaching the low 60s and southern Utah rising into the mid 60s. Northern Utah will begin to dry out, but scattered showers may occur in the south.

SUNDAY

Another round of isolated showers is expected across southern and eastern Utah as the storm system exits the state. Across the Wasatch Front, skies will be mostly cloudy, with temperatures near 60 degrees in the north and above 60 degrees in the south.

There is a high chance that this storm system will bring a significant change to Utah's weather pattern, but timing, intensity and snow depth may still vary.
