A wild snake snakes its way into the Dodgers dugout during Game 2 of NLCS – NBC Los Angeles

A wild snake snakes its way into the Dodgers dugout during Game 2 of NLCS – NBC Los Angeles

The Dodgers were already dealing with the pressure of a close National League Championship Series game against the New York Mets when an unexpected visitor decided to join the action.

During the fifth inning of Game 2 Monday afternoon at Dodger Stadium, as pitcher Brent Honeywell stood on the top step of the dugout, he noticed something was out of place. Something slips.

This time it wasn't the New York Mets causing the upset – it was a snake.

In a moment that can only be described as surreal, Honeywell drew attention to the reptilian intruder casually moving across the steps. It wasn't the Arizona Diamondbacks traveling to LA early, nor was it a prop from a Hollywood set – it was a real, live snake. And while it wasn't big enough to pose a real threat, it was definitely an eye-catcher.

β€œI’ve seen all sorts of things in the dugout,” Honeywell joked. β€œBut as I walked away I saw there was just a snake there. I don't think Danny (Dodgers bench coach Danny Lehman) saw them. She was right next to him. I was hoping it was a rally snake and we pushed a few runs over after that.

FOX Sports play-by-play announcer Joe Davis couldn't help but joke, calling it “the latest Hollywood hit: 'Snake in the Dugout,'” as the cameras focused on the newest – and most bizarre – visitor the Dodgers zoomed.

A quick-thinking member of the Dodgers' field team rushed over, wrapped the snake in a towel and carried it off the field to put an end to the unusual disruption. But for the Dodgers, this was much more than just a strange coincidence. It was the kind of wild moment that postseason baseball is known for, something that becomes legend. We've seen rally squirrels, rally geese and now maybe the rally snake?

For Honeywell, however, this wasn't his first encounter with a reptile in baseball. In 2015, as a Rays prospect, he faced a 10-foot alligator in a dugout. Maybe, just maybe, he has a knack for attracting the unexpected.

β€œJust something to get the guys to move a little different than everyone else,” Honeywell said of the sight of the snake.

Maybe there's something to be said that the Dodgers need some wild energy in their dugout. After all, the postseason thrives on chaos, on moments that seem too ridiculous to be scripted. In 2011, the Cardinals rallied behind a squirrel that scurried across home plate, and in 2022, the Padres found inspiration in a goose that landed in the outfield during their own playoff run against the Dodgers. Maybe this snake is the Dodgers' answer.

As far as the game goes, the snake didn't seem to faze the Dodgers much, but its sudden appearance definitely added a little spice to an already exciting, high-stakes series.

The Dodgers were down 6-0 in the game when Honeywell saw the snake and managed to score three runs to come close. Ultimately, they lost the game 7-3, evening their best-of-seven series with the Mets at one game apiece.

It's moments like this that remind us why October baseball is unlike any other.

A snake in the shelter? Just another chapter in the unpredictable, unscripted drama of the MLB playoffs.
