ALCS Game 1: The Yankees push past the Guardians to take a 5-2 win and take a 1-0 lead

The New York Yankees made it into the American League Championship Series on Monday.

The Yankees swept the Cleveland Guardians to win 5-2 in Game 1 of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium. That gave them a 1-0 series lead and was just three wins away from their first World Series since 2009.

The Yankees, with pop star Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in the Bronx, got going in the third inning on Monday. First, it was Juan Soto who opened the game with a solo home run to deep center field. That was his first home run this postseason.

Joey Cantillo fell apart a bit on the mound after filling in for starter Alex Cobb. He allowed two more Yankees runs on wild pitches, giving New York a 3-0 lead. Cantillo eventually struck out Alex Verdugo to end the inning – his second wild pitch bounced in front of the plate, allowing Giancarlo Stanton to sneak home – but he walked two more batters in the next inning before being replaced by Pedro Avila became.

The Yankees added another run in the fourth when Aaron Judge hit a sacrifice fly to score Gleyber Torres, increasing the lead to four.

While the Guardians finally got into the game in the sixth on a solo home run by Brayan Rocchio and added another run in the eighth when Steven Kwan hit an RBI single, that was all they could accomplish. The Yankees scored again in the seventh on a Stanton solo shot and secured the three-run victory.

Yankees starter Carlos Rodon had nine strikeouts and allowed just three hits in his six innings on the mound. Luke Weaver made a five-out save at the end of the night and ended the game by striking out Austin Hedges. Weaver is now the first pitcher since 2017 to record three saves of more than three outs in a single postseason.

The two teams will repeat on Tuesday before the series shifts to Cleveland for Game 3. The Guardians have not advanced past the ALDS since losing to the Chicago Cubs in the 2016 World Series.

    And that's enough. The Yankees officially get the win and lead the Guardians 1-0 in the series.

    The Guardians put two runners into play, one of whom was eliminated at the end of the eighth. Andres Gimenez hits a single, then Brayan Rocchio hits a single. However, it is believed that Tim Hill interfered with Rocchio as he rounded first base. So Gimenez gets third base while Rocchio gets second base.

    Erik Sabrowski almost got out of the seventh inning, retiring Aaron Judge and Austin Wells. Then he had a hit to Giancarlo Stanton, who smashed a ball deep into left field.

    Three plus points, three minus points for the Guardians at the start of the seventh period. Lane Thomas grounded out to second base, Josh Naylor flied out to center field and pinch-hitter Kyle Manzardo struck out.

  • Carlos Rodon comes out of the 6th

    Carlos Rodon comes out in the top of the sixth, but Jose Ramirez hits his final pitch (of a nine-pitch batter) deep to left-center. Aaron Judge got it figured out for the final out of the inning.

    Rodon retired three batters in a row after giving up Brayan Rocchio's home run and getting a Steven Kwan groundout to third base and a David Fry flyout to right base before Ramirez could take his ball away.

    That was probably Rodon's last inning. He threw 93 pitches.

    Brayan Rocchio breaks Carlos Rodon's streak of 11 consecutive batters retired with a leadoff home run to left field.

    That cuts the Yankees' lead to 4-1.

  • The Guardians get a much-needed 1-2-3 inning

    Pedro Avila calmed the situation for Cleveland at the end of the fifth period and eliminated the team one by one.

    Jazz Chisholm Jr. grounded out to second base, Anthony Volpe flew to the warning track in right field and Anthony Rizzo flew to left field.

    The Yankes lead 4-0 by the end of the sixth.

    Two more strikeouts for Carlos Rodon in a 1-2-3 top of the fifth. He had nine strikeouts for the game and needed just 11 pitches to complete the frame.

    Rodon has allowed just two hits on 70 pitches in five innings.

    Pedro Avila has three fly ball outs, one of which scored a run. Aaron Judge, Austin Wells and Giancarlo Stanton each fly out and the Guardians finally get out of the fourth inning.

    Controlling Joey Cantillo continues to be an issue. After rebounding two wild pitches and scoring two runs in the third, the left-hander threw two more wild pitches.

    He led Gleyber Torres out of bounds. Torres then advanced to second with another wild pitch, throwing a curveball that didn't curve and went high over Bo Naylor. Another bounced throw moved Torres to third.

    After hitting Juan Soto, Cantillo is out. Runners on first and third with no outs while Pedro Avila takes the mound for Cleveland.

    In the fourth inning, Carlos Rodon ran into trouble in his start in ALDS Game 2 against the Royals.

    But he mastered the fourth period against the Guardians, getting Jose Ramirez to move to midfield before picking off Lane Thomas and Josh Naylor to end the frame.

    Joey Cantillo bounced another pitch in front of home plate and Bo Naylor can't block it. That brings Giancarlo Stanton home for a 3-0 Yankees lead.

    Joey Cantillo skips a pitch in front of the plate for a wild pitch. Bo Naylor can't make it and Aaron Judge scores to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.

    Cantillo then joined Anthony Rizzo to reload the bases, prompting a visit from Guardians pitching coach Carl Willis.
