Mike Williams falls: Jets WR caps miserable game against Bills by falling on Aaron Rodgers' game-winning INT

The Jets can have a lot of blame for their “Monday Night Football” loss to the Bills – penalties, missed kicks, red zone issues – but for the second straight game, it all came down to a mistake by Mike Williams.

The Jets' final offensive play, where Williams failed on a third-and-16 that the Jets had to effectively convert, ended in an interception by Taron Johnson. The moment was similar to the Jets' last offensive play eight days earlier, when an interception dashed New York's hopes because Williams was out of sync with Aaron Rodgers.

The problem with Williams is even bigger than just the occasional slip-up. The Jets brought him in to replace Garrett Wilson, but the former Chargers star now appears destined for a short stint in New York.

Here's a look at Williams' ugly game against the Bills on Monday night.

In the Jets' 23-20 loss to the Bills on Monday, Williams went without a catch on three targets. He let New York's offense down with a drop early in the fourth quarter, although the play was erased from most memories when Rodgers hit Lazard for the first down anyway. In the final game, however, there was no hiding from the moment.

Jets fans saw Rodgers hurl the ball downfield on third-and-16 and quickly noticed a wide-open receiver waiting for the pass – Williams had a window to catch it, but he inexplicably slipped . Bills CB Taron Johnson pounced for the interception, which was a remarkable play in itself.

The Jets' defense allowed a first down on the ensuing drive, making it the offense's last play of the night.

Just eight days earlier, Stephon Gilmore recorded a game-winning interception of Rodgers when Williams appeared to run through his route. Williams had his back to the ball approaching him, likely due to a miscommunication, and Gilmore was easily able to take the pass, which would be the final nail in the coffin of Robert Saleh's tenure.

While some things change, others stay the same. The Jets entered Week 6 with a new head coach and offensive lineman, but execution errors and self-inflicted mistakes cost them dearly. Williams' failures were self-inflicted mistakes for which no coach is responsible given his age and experience.

Williams played a small role early in the season as he recovered from a torn ACL, but he has only two catches in his last two games despite getting healthier. Here's a look at his disappointing stats in six games with the Jets.

Williams was brought in to enhance the No. 2 receiver role alongside Wilson, winning about 50-50 balls from Rodgers. While he got some of those throws from Rodgers in the Jets' otherwise lifeless loss to the Broncos, the former Chargers star simply hasn't lived up to expectations so far.

With just 145 yards in six games, Williams has 411 yards in 17 games. Up until that point, he had been kept out of the end zone and his catch percentage dropped from 71.4 percent to 58.8 percent as a result of Monday's catchless game.

The reemergence of Lazard, who had 114 yards and scored his fifth touchdown of the season against the Bills, has made Williams even less of a factor for the Jets, but he still had enough of a role to derail New York than it did it came down to most of them in consecutive weeks.
