Susan Smith receives a new prison violation weeks before she is eligible for parole

GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) – Susan Smith, who is serving a life sentence for the 1994 murders of her two sons, was convicted of a new disciplinary infraction following a hearing in October.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections said Smith spoke to a documentary filmmaker on the phone about her crimes.

“She agreed to provide the filmmaker with contact information for friends, family and victims, including her former husband,” an SCDC spokesperson said. “The filmmaker also deposited money into Smith’s account.”

Prison inmates in South Carolina are not allowed to conduct telephone or in-person interviews, but they are allowed to write letters.

Smith, who is being held at Leath Correctional in Greenwood, lost her phone, tablet and cafeteria privileges for 90 days starting Oct. 4.

Smith is eligible for parole in November. Her two sons, three-year-old Michael and one-year-old Alex, were reported missing in October 1994. For nine days, Smith pleaded on local and national television for the safe return of her boys, claiming they had been kidnapped by a car thief.

In reality, Smith rolled her Mazda Protege into John D. Long Lake in Union County with the two children still strapped into their car seats.

The violation is the first disciplinary punishment Smith has received in prison since 2015. She was previously punished for drug use and sex with a prison guard.
