October's full moon orbits closer to Earth than any other full moon so far this year, making it a special supermoon that appears brighter and larger when viewed over several days.

October's full moon, also known as the iconic Hunter's Moon, will be the third of four consecutive supermoons this year.

When is the full moon in October 2024?

The next full moon will be on Thursday, October 17th, with peak illumination at 7:26 a.m. Eastern Time. It will be below the horizon, so wait until sunset to watch it rise and appear in the sky.

Similar to September's Harvest Moon, the Hunter's Moon rises around the same time for several nights.

Why is it called the Hunter's Moon?

The Hunter's Moon's name comes from the traditional hunting season, as the brighter moonlight allowed hunters to track and gather game in preparation for the cold days and nights of the coming winter.

According to the Farmer's Almanac, October was the time of year in the Northern Hemisphere when falling leaves and lingering moonlight made it easier to see and hunt animals at night, and the undergrowth is less dense, making hunting and tracking easier.

The term Hunter's Moon dates back to 1710, although it is also known as the Sanguine or Blood Moon and also refers to the blood of the hunt or the color of the changing autumn leaves.

What is a Supermoon?

A supermoon occurs when the moon's orbit is closest to Earth and the moon is full at the same time. According to NASA, at a distance of about 226,000 miles from Earth, the full moon appears brighter and larger than a normal full moon, hence the term supermoon.

This October supermoon will hover above the horizon around sunset and, due to its proximity to Earth, will create the illusion of a larger and brighter orange moon.

When is the next full moon in November 2024?

The next full moon, the Beaver Moon, occurs on Friday, November 15th. It is the last supermoon of 2024.

The supermoons will not return until October 2025.
