Phillies extend manager Rob Thomson's contract through 2026

PHILADELPHIA – The Phillies, despite another disappointing postseason exit, have shown a vote of confidence in the club's direction by extending manager Rob Thomson's contract for a year and retaining all of his coaches.

Thomson, whose contract was set to expire after the 2025 season, now has a contract through 2026. The manager advocated for his staff to return, and Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski agreed.

Dombrowski preached the status quo in his season-ending press conference on Tuesday. That doesn't stop the Phillies from making changes to their roster. They will, although Dombrowski – as expected – declined to reveal many of his cards in mid-October.

But they chose continuity in the voices that guide the whole thing.

“They led us to 95 wins,” Dombrowski said. “You’ve been with us for a few years. Many cases, three years and some beyond. The. They are very efficient. They do their job well. We have a good manager. They work well with the manager.”

The Phillies had never debated Thomson's status. It was important for Dombrowski to avoid possible speculation by extending Thomson for another year.

“It was pretty easy for me in that regard,” Dombrowski said. “Anytime you have a disappointing result, which was the case for us, in this case it's hard to blame them. We all share in what happened. I don’t think it was the right thing to blame any one of them.”

The Phillies have made the postseason in each of Thomson's three years as coach. They were eliminated one round earlier every year. Thomson's .575 winning percentage is the highest of any manager in Phillies history and fifth in Major League Baseball since he was named interim manager on June 3, 2022.

“This is the only place I want to be,” said Thomson, 61. “This will be my last stop.”
